Twitter's stock plunges on weak user numbers

Source: AP

.
The Latest on Twitter Inc.'s quarterly earnings report. (all times local):

4 p.m.

Twitter's stock plunged 20.5 percent after the company said monthly users decreased in the second quarter.

In percentage terms, the decline was slightly worse than Facebook's plunge the day before, but Facebook is a far more valuable company.

Twitter and Facebook are trying to reduce the amount of abuse and hate speech on their platforms, but that's affecting their growth, one of the things investors value the most.

They zotzed more than 70,000 accounts they judged to be bots, sometime in June. At the same time they warned in the press release that it would show as a decline in user numbers.

If they're willing to take the hit to clean up the service, it's a good start.

judiciously,
Bright

probably hear alot of crickets from the Repugnants but since its Repugnants getting banned they are up in arms claiming their first amendment rights are being violated!!!!
Which proves alot of them never have read the Constitution as the 1st amendment only protects us from the government it does nothing to protect us from a corporation censoring someone.

Amazon's future was filled with doubt in 1999 ... bankruptcy any day, debt as far as the eye could see. For Twitter this just means it was pumped up artificially by bogus accounts, and it will take time to rebuild on solid footing of genuine users.

Do not call it shadow banning. That is Trump's accusation. Twitter denies it. Don't let Trump define the landscape. Shadow banning is akin to Witch Hunt. Paranoid delusions of a con man.

On Thursday morning, President Donald Trump called out Twitter, accusing the social network of shadow banning prominent Republicans. The reaction came after Vice News reported that Twitter wasn't autopopulating Republicans in its drop-down search box.

But that's not shadow banning -- it's a bug, according to Twitter.

"We do not shadow ban," Twitter said in a blog post Thursday. "You are always able to see the tweets from accounts you follow (although you may have to do more work to find them, like go directly to their profile)."

"We are aware that some accounts are not automatically populating in our search box, and [we're] shipping a change to address this," a Twitter spokesperson said earlier in the day. "The profiles, tweets and discussions about these accounts do appear when you search for them. To be clear, our behavioral ranking doesn't make judgments based on political views or the substance of tweets."

Bot purges. These same bots, which is what helped to cause havoc around the world, were allowed to proliferate in order to inflate their user numbers for the benefit of their stockholders.

At least they're trying? And to be fair, Fox's Twitter feed has less rightwing disinformation than this thread. And a lot less James O'Keefe videos...

I expect that at least 1/2 of Drumpf's followers are bots and his numbers haven't changed.......
