GOP Lawmaker Said Black Welfare Recipients 'Substituted One Plantation For Another'

Last edited Sat Jul 28, 2018, 06:40 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Huffington Post

Rep. Jason Lewis (R-Minn.) called welfare recipients "parasites" and compared the benefits program to slavery in the most recent of a series of derogatory remarks unearthed by CNN. "Now, you've got the modern welfare state that tells black folks and Hispanic folks and poor white folks: 'Don't worry.

In an April 2012 segment of his radio show, "The Jason Lewis Show," the congressman suggested that black Americans who receive welfare are still living on a "plantation."

"Blacks fought so hard ... so blacks could take care of themselves and not be told what to do," Lewis said. "Now, you've got the modern welfare state that tells black folks and Hispanic folks and poor white folks: 'Don't worry. We'll take care of you.' What is the difference? You've substituted one plantation for another."

...

"It is possible because the Democratic dream come true is this: The parasites outnumber the producers," Lewis said. "Then, when the parasites outnumber the producers, the party of parasites will give the majority of votes."

Probably meant "the party of parasites will GET the majority of votes" in the last sentence.

The race for the Minnesota 2nd Congressional district seat (south of the Twin Cities, including some of the metro area) is rated a toss up by Cook Political Report

Several CNN stories about his past remarks:

https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/20/politics/kfile-jason-lewis-racial-comments/index.html

I'm surprised that so many inflammatory comments are showing up in the mainstream media just in the past 2 weeks. After all, he was elected almost 2 years ago.

Jason Lewis Wikipedia - (has some of his awful remarks). Sorry I can't make the link work, even when I construct it with the LINK button. So click on the below:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Lewis_(Minnesota_politician)

and choose the 5th choice:

"Jason Lewis (Minnesota politician) (born 1955), United States Representative representing Minnesota's 2nd district, former radio talk show host"

or, if you prefer, copy the entirety of the above link and paste it into your browser's address box.

1. When Jason Lewis had his radio show he was a small-market Rush Limbaugh

and every bit as disgusting. Since he became a Congressman he's suppressed most of his most blatantly racist and misogynistic comments (at least in public) but he's just as much a right-wing asshole as ever. I hope Angie Craig whups his ass hard in November.

20. :) In 2016 Dem Angie Craig lost to Lewis by only 1.8%,

I notice. Paul Ryan is giving the scumbag "tentative support" according to WaPo, which sounds about right for Ryan.

I particularly like this one that comes in the context of lamenting the loss of that fine old double standard that defined which women were to be cherished and which were appropriate for abuse:

“It used to be that women were held to a little bit of a higher standard. We required modesty from women,” Lewis said. “Now, are we beyond those days where a woman can behave as a slut, but you can’t call her a slut?”

Poor fellow. He must have a lot he's bursting to say these days about Angie Craig and all the other women running for office, and of course about the #metoo-type revelations running men like him out of office.

25. Craig would probably have won had Paula Overby not siphoned off nearly 8% of the vote

Craig is running again this year and based on what I see at the Secretary of State's website, she and Lewis are the only two candidates running.

30. Overby has a technical right to run for office,

of course, but in 2016 did she wrestle with her conscience over what effect a candidacy could very predictably have? Not being from MI, your mention made me wonder if she was shamed and regretful after helping put that despicable right-wing creep in office. That her very candidacy completely sabotaged everything she claims to stand for?

Guess not if she's now running for U.S. senate as the Green Party candidate. Good grief. Maybe she was dropped on her head as a baby.

At least she's unlikely to do much harm to her supposed principles this time. And, a dysfunctional party that seemingly exists to defeat its own declared goals, and never elect anyone, is an appropriate place for this one.

Go, Amy!

Nursery rhyme mentality.

When you listen to Jason Lewis you’re substituting Jason’s stupidity for your own.

3. What's pathetic is that's the way many Republicans think of those who are down on their luck.

Instead of a helping hand so people can get their medicines and some food while going through a hard time, they think they're long term deadbeats who choose to get minimal food and minimal bottom of the bucket health care.

Many people who get food stamps and medicaid are employed. The working poor...a fast growing group in America.

This attitude disgusts me. They blame the Democrats, liberals, and poor people for everything they think is wrong. No one in their group. No, not them. They are responsible for everything that's right with the world. What's right with the world is that they have money and power, in their view.

...in a no-brainer stock index fund. In other words, Trumpie is a rich brat who got a lot of money from Daddy and still has some of it left.

17. THIS

First thing out of my mouth when I saw the OP was to say that because of their sheer numbers (whites are STILL the majority of the U.S.), there are more poor whites on "welfare" and other assistance programs than the COMBINED number of just about every other group (POC) that collects this assistance.

But some who keep parroting this (including those in the administration) know this and so they try to come up with "exemptions" and other dirty tricks to keep their poor white populace from getting the impact to cuts in programs such as Medicaid (i.e., that eventually torpedoed draft to remove "work requirements" from rural whites in Michigan so that they only applied to urban, predominately black areas).

14. This is very poisonous dogma that's been prevalent with Repugs far too long.

I hope our Democratic Party can encourage a common dialog among all 2018 candidates to help reverse this upside-down bullshit Repugs have been spreading since the Nixon years and expanded 100X during Raygun's time, and then through right-wing media.

We need attractive phrases that counter those very lies this Repugs told his constituents - perhaps by explaining that a minimum wage is not a living wage and that these less fortunate folks are hard working but need assistance just to get by.

23. Thanks. it gives me a list of 8 Jason Lewis's with the 5th being the one of interest

The " (Minnesota_politician) " ending didn't make it as part of the link.

But I suppose that's easier to use, and tell people to pick the 5th choice:

"Jason Lewis (Minnesota politician) (born 1955), United States Representative representing Minnesota's 2nd district, former radio talk show host"

would be easier for most than copying and pasting the URL.

I edited my OP to include both methods. Thanks again!
