Latino Voters Angry at Trump But Not Mobilized, Democratic Report Finds

Source: Roll Call

Democrats have a chance to win big in this year’s midterms by channeling Latino voters’ anger at President Donald Trump’s immigration and health care agenda, according to the findings of a Democratic-funded study released Tuesday.

But first, they’ll have to convince Latinos their vote will mean something.

The study found “significant challenges for Democrats” in convincing Latino voters that a Democrat-controlled Congress would affect important changes. But there is “also an immense opportunity” for Democrats to mobilize Latinos who oppose the Trump administration’s policies and rhetoric, the authors said.

Political polling firm Latino Decisions conducted the research, which was commissioned by three top Democratic fundraising groups: the House Majority PAC, Priorities USA and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Bold PAC.

Latinos are more likely than other voters to lack insurance, the study said, and they received greater gains in coverage from the Affordable Care Act than other populations.

While the party doesn't sanction illegal immigration, the current admin's way of handling it has been shockingly cruel. Many Latinos, even American born, are affected by the country's stance on immigration, whether directly or thru relatives.

David Hogg just did a tweet yesterday about displaced Puerto Ricans needing to mobilize and vote.

yet not be "mobilized" to vote them out of office. If they give control to Democrats and feel let down, they can vote against them too. Not voting only ensures that they have no power or influence over policy.

3. We've done fuck-all for Latinos in recent years

We've been too busy chasing the mythical white working class. As it is we've given Latino voters very little reason to think we can make things better for them in any concrete way.

I spoke to someone last night in a nearby community. She has a lot of contacts in the Hispanic community in our county. There is NOT ONE Democratic precinct committee person in her town, which has a lot of Hispanics. We need to make sure they are included, and that they are represented well on the local level.

from newer, particularly undocumented, immigrants.

"You're Americans now," the gist of it was. "And nothing like those people."

The height of that divide-and-conquer campaign was probably in '04, and there were always Latinos willing to carry water (they were clever enough not to send white Rethugs on that particular errand).

I'm sure it's still ongoing - now more than ever, what with this White House.

Didn't register to vote till I told him he couldn't talk about his opinions if he didn't vote. So, he registered.

He had grown up in countries that were either under a military junta or a corrupt government where elections were fraudulent. He didn't understand that his vote really could count. He truly didn't, and he was an educated professional.

Such a difference in how we perceive a government, elected by the people, and how others do when corruption reigns.

Many Latino's I know are pissed at trump and republicans, and ready to vote against them this Nov. . They know what he's doing to them and many others , and I think they'll show up in huge numbers even after he threatens them with voter intimidation suggesting they will be arrested if they show up.

It is now or never--after labor day may be too late. So much to do before Nov.

....However, Democrats cannot necessarily count on Latino support to carry them in 2018, the study said.

“Participants understand the importance of voting, but candidates and parties do not communicate a clear agenda to Latinos,” the authors wrote.
