Obama Endorses Long List Of Candidates Ahead Of 2018 Elections

Source: TPM

Former President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced a list of candidates he was endorsing ahead of the 2018 elections.

Included on the list were some well-known Democrats who’d already advanced past their state’s primary race, such as California gubernatorial candidate c and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

Obama endorsed the former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Richard Cordray, to be Ohio’s next governor, and J.B. Pritzker, the brother of Obama administration Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, to be Illinois’ next governor.

1. Biden-Obama running in 2020?

I just saw this posted on PBO's Twitter thread. I'm pretty sure this is a joke. Does anybody know anything about this?

(Be still my foolish heart!) They did have lunch together the other day.

2. Notice the lack of a verified identity checkmark on the "ThePresObama" tweet. It's not his account.

3. OK - thought it was something like that

I hope Obama is able to delete this or block it.

28. Since it's not Obama's account, how could he delete it? It's a scam.

Note the poor grammar in the teeet - another sign of a scam.

4. He endorsed Tom Malinowski NJ 7th!

We knew he would (he worked in his Admin) - but this is a district that went:

2008 - Obama
2012 - Romney
2016 - HRC

Tom has a shot. All of those elections - Lance won. Now with Republicans in control of the WH, Sen and House - we have a shot.

11. These are part of a series of endorsements

Do you really think he’s going to skip Beto in a race against Ted Cruz? Or maybe you do. I know from previous interactions with you you’re not a big obama fan.

24. No because

He did endorse two House candidates in Texas. It did say it was the first wave.

16. I think you're right

I've read in a few places that he's waiting to see what Beto would want
Jumping into a state where he lost could be more harmful than helpful
He hasn't endorsed any red state Democrats running for Senate (though he's only endorsed one senator at all-- Nevada)
He's steered clear of a few House races in areas districts that he lost both times.
Contrary to what some here think, his endorsement is not gold everywhere. And contrary to what some people think around the country, his endorsement is gold in some places
Obama is not a stupid person. This early on, I think he goes for places where he is an obvious plus and will endorse others as time goes on based on how helpful he can be

19. Endorsements should...

The purpose of endorsements is to help the candidate being endorsed... Not to inflate the ego of the person doing the endorsing!

This isn't President Obama's first time at the rodeo. He knows what he's doing.

15. it could be strategic . most Obama people most likely already support Beto

Obama getting involved might turn off those who lean conservative but are open to voting for a democrat this time because they have some problems with trump or cruz or whoever.

but at the same time they don't want their vote to be seen as a vote for democrats .

22. Notice that all the stories about these endorsements refer to them as the "first wave"...

...I'm sure there will be more in the near future.

And it appears that he's steered clear of endorsing any candidates involved in Democratic primaries, too.

My guess is that once the primaries are over (most are coming up in the next few weeks) there will be another wave of more targeted endorsements.

17. I don't think so

They seem to be mostly former administration officials (at some level)
He seems to have avoided districts and states that he lost both times. Though, I think he may add some later depending on whether or not he thinks his endorsement will help or hurt

9. I can see San Jose peak, in Mexico from my living room window.

I'm about 12 miles, as the crow flies, from the border. Az, district 2,
currently represented by Martha McSally. It was Giffords district, then
Barber, now McSally. I'll be voting for Matt Heinz in the mids.
I'm pretty sure Obama would endorse Heinz--they already know each other.

18. Don't think an Obama endorsement helps Cordray in OH

much, if at all.

He endorsed a couple PA congressional candidates, both in eastern PA, Dean (PA-4, Montgomery Co) and Wild (PA-7, Allentown/Bethlehem area), 1 state senate and 2 state house candidates. The CDs are in pretty Dem areas, but outside of Philadelphia, SE Pa and Allegheny County, Obama is still a lightening rod who can motivate currently depressed Republicans to get out and vote. Hopefully, Obama will stay away as the PA Dem party has organically re-energized.

20. Obama/Pelosi endorsements in Alabama and red-leaning districts all over...

would be the 'kiss of death' for a Democratic campaign.

Once again, pragmatism trumps idealism for the good of the Party.

Obama did not endorse Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York.

If that's so, why ever didn't he endorse her?

And even more, why do her followers even want an endorsement from him? Doesn't he represent everything they hate about the Democratic Party?
