PINK PROTEST (on convention floor during Ryan speech)
Source: AP
As Paul Ryan was in the midst of an attack-dog speech accepting the vice presidential nomination, he was disrupted by a pink banner and a yelling protester. The protester, apparently from the group Code Pink, was escorted out as some in the crowd started shouting "U-S-A."

kas125
(2,472 posts)the sign than for people to protest against Ryan's 13th century beliefs. I'm sure that she didn't "target" the kids, she just stopped where and when she could. It's pretty evident that you've never done anything like what CP does every day or you'd know that a protester inside a big convention like the RNC has to hold up the banner as quickly and as often as you can before security grabs you and takes you out.
And I STILL don't care if the kids saw the banner, I think they SHOULD know that people object to their father trying to control every woman in America's body.

Protest. Wear your vagina costumes - just don't stop in front of the Ryan family and wave the friggen vag banner.

kas125
(2,472 posts)seeing a word on a sign, especially if it's a five year old who can't even read it! I have never censored what my kids see, read, or listen to and all three turned out to be wonderful people.
I truly do not understand your objection to the word, to a child seeing it, or understand any of what you've been complaining about. I do not understand your objection to a child seeing a biological term written on a banner. Vagina is a medical or scientific term, not a word that a child shouldn't see and I really, really don't know what you think is so horrible about a kid seeing the word.
mzmolly
(50,957 posts)ignorance.
I do not object to children learning the word vagina - for goodness sakes. I object to the political idiocy of deliberately targeting Ryan's kids in the process of protesting. Is that really so hard to grasp?
kas125
(2,472 posts)You don't object to kids learning the word, but you keep saying the kids shouldn't see a banner that says vagina, that someone else can chase kids around a playground and yell the word at them, etc.
Where I live, which is in nowhere, Indiana, not a big city, it's not a dirty word. Little kids learn the word when they learn nose, teeth, ears, fingers and all their other body parts and I sincerely doubt that any kid would be traumatized from seeing the word written on a banner.
So, yes, it's hard to grasp what you are complaining about, it truly is.

I applaud code pink for being at the RNC. I just feel that move wasn't well thought out.
kas125
(2,472 posts)their father is trying to do to ALL the women in this country. If he had his kids there, then it was his choice to involve them, not Laura's. And I'll be sure to pass the word to the rest of CP that you don't approve. I'm sure they'll be heartbroken, lol.

kas125
(2,472 posts)they'll be at the DNC, too. But if you really want to know, I don't know anyone who didn't vote for him and work for him in 2008. Most of us do want Obama to win, even though we hate his drones killing innocent people and that our kids are still dying in countries where we shouldn't have been in the first place and that the military is using them up and not taking care of them when they get home.
And I STILL don't understand what your objection to what happened earlier tonight is all about and I'm tired of this conversation because it's going nowhere. You contradict yourself in every other post and I'm finished trying to understand you.
mzmolly
(50,957 posts)My only issue was deliberately pausing, and holding the "can't say it..." sign up in front of the Ryan children. As I've said, they knew that some are uncomfortable saying vagina, thus the slogan. Yet, they chose to use children in the protest? WTF?!

jtuck004
(15,882 posts)and they might associate these folks with ANY opponent to Ryan, and make him look more reasonable. I saw a few bits of his speech, the part where he was appealing to the disaffected. If they hear or learn nothing else, he sounded pretty good. And since it's possible that we will have a stolen, I mean close, election, this is certainly an important point.
On the other hand, his kids have had their brains steeped in women hating and condescension, been taught by a father who thinks rape is just another method of conception, who seems like he wants to look smugly out on a landscape littered with the corpses of coat-hanger-caused dead mothers and their fetuses in alleys and motel rooms, longs to take food stamps away from about 8 to 10 million neighbors of ours leaving them starving, cold, hungry, and sometimes dead. Look out on that, fold his arms and and be PROUD, knowing that he was the one who engineered it.
(Want to know who he wants to pay lower taxes? Watch Million Dollar Listing, check out Bravo TV. These are the wealthy, some of the least productive people you will ever see., who he thinks need tax breaks so they can buy $600 hair cuts and pay for the masseuse for their dog.)
Given that, I think his kids won't be hurt by a picture of a vagina, or even a larger-than-life model. And, frankly, if people would rather vote for those policies above because someone put the word VAGINA on a sign, if their neighbors and this country mean so freakin' little to them, I am not sure there really is anything we could possibly do to affect that.
But you may be right.
I can't help trying to think of different analogies when I look at things like this, trying to decide if an action was helpful or not.
What if Hitler was up there making a speech about sending Jews to concentration camps, and trying to get people to vote for him? (And I don't mean to make Hitler look bad by pairing him with Ryan, it's just for example). And then the Colonel walks across in front with a vagina costume on.
Would you really be afraid that new Nazi's would be signing up in droves because of it?
(I don't mean any disrespect, Hitler killed 6 million Jews. If Ryan's no quarter abortion policies go into effect, there will very likely be thousands of dead kids and moms every year. Ryan wants to take the food that runs out the third week of every month from the "lucky" recipients, most of whom are kids. There are no other good choices for the numbers of people we would have to provide for if he hurts that program. And when his economic plans go into effect we will, (there is virtually no disagreement, except from other of his True Believers) almost certainly enter a deep and long-lasting depression, which at this stage could well mean the end of this country and perhaps the untimely deaths of millions of our friends and neighbors. So it may not be the exaggeration it appears at first glance. People may die early at home or in the streets instead of in a prison. But they are just as surely murdered. He very well could be responsible for more death and misery over the next 4 or 8 years than the Nazi's. That has to give one pause.)
Frankly, I don't understand why there aren't hundreds of women at every stop throwing bloody dolls at him. A sign with the word Vagina? It's about respect for women, and it's less than he deserves. In comparison to Ryan, their demonstration doesn't seem so bad to me. But I respect that ymmv, and your opinion.
On the other hand, perhaps their target is the people at home, in addition to Ryan. Remember, they arrested Lenny Bruce for obscene language, George Carlin used "obscene" words in his limited-distribution monologue (before the Internet put him everywhere), and now you can hear the same words on evening TV.
Maybe the day vagina can be said on the floor of an elected body and not get the representative thrown out, (derived from a time when the poor little dears needed to be protected from themselves, with all those nasty parts an all) or the day these people (mostly men, but women too) quit trying to make other people's reproductive decisions for them, or the day an astronaut who risked her life in the service of this country can die without having her partner of many years denied her benefits, (the War on Women covers a lot of ground) they won't have to do this, no matter who is running for President.
But like I said, you might be right.
mzmolly
(50,957 posts)Again, I'm worried about winning an election. I hate to sound crass, but I don't care about his kids feelings surrounding seeing a vagina sign. I care about how it played out on television. That said, most media outlets may not make hay out of it. I hope that is so.
True, we're not talking Hitler, or droves of voters, here. But we might be talking about the invasion of Syria vs. not invading. And, presumably Code Pink would want to support the guy who will not listen to McCain on foreign policy?
The election is within a single digit, according to an average of national polls.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/general_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html
There are smart ways to protest in favor of choice. Using the Ryan kids as a prop, was not among them.
Edited to add, thank you for your thoughtful post.

jtuck004
(15,882 posts)it's being seen using the kids. But with all the spitting, and name-calling, and shoe- and word-throwing going on the past few years, maybe it doesn't stand out so bad.
But we all have things we would do different if we were king or queen, eh
I am much more concerned about the candidates, they set the tone. Obama at Iowa -
"Obama's Campaign Speech at Iowa State University ... And the truth is you've got more at stake in this election than just about anybody"
It was good, it was impassioned, it exhorted them to get out and vote. I'm sure his advisers were pleased.
But it doesn't speak to the 50 year old with a family and a mortgage (10-15 million still in trouble, more every day) laid off in 2009 and still not employed full-time and may not be before early Social Security, while Paul Ryan and his snake-oil-peddling generalities were focused like a laser on that guy. It didn't speak to the widow who is today on a fixed income budget, who Ryan is telling "Nothing will change for you" - even though you and I and half the country knows she will face an additional $6500 a year in potential charges for pills - Paul Ryan said come to our side if things are not working for you. (We know he means "Come to our side, and die". But again, with no details he can start to pull people into his web).
Sure, the students have a rough road ahead. We all do. Some have advantages that older folks don't, That little old woman down the street hasn't got anything to fall back on, and lives a much more precarious life.
Though I can understand the thinking, and who the party thinks it can win with, I wish he had given a speech that told them they needed to stand with each other, with their friends and neighbors, with the old folks, the hungry, and those with low-income, that if we don't ALL do better, nobody will, and that we ALL need to help each other vote, whether it means volunteering to drive someone to get a license, or watching their dog so they can mark a ballot.
But that's not this campaign, else we might be hearing about the increase in poverty that is occurring and that we cannot let it stand, regardless of party. But probably not a key demographic there either.
I hope his advisers are correct, for all of us.
Good night, mzmolly.
(Quick edit - And they MAY have a point. My wife's mother lives with us, 91 years old, likes to watch Ice Road Truckers. She marks her own ballot. I asked why she voted for Obama. She said she started voting Democratic in Oklahoma where she grew up, and always has. So I suspect they know how many seniors they can count on, if they are allowed to vote))
