Michael Avenatti has arrived in Iowa. After three canceled flights and a 700-mile road trip, the lawyer known for representing adult film actress Stormy Daniels in her case against Republican President Donald Trump, is ready to put his stake in the ground in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.
"Im exploring a run for the presidency of the United States, and I wanted to come to Iowa and listen to people and learn about some issues that are facing the citizens of Iowa and do my homework," Avenatti told the Des Moines Register in an interview Thursday.
Avenatti, who rose to prominence as an outspoken critic of the president, toured the Iowa State Fair Thursday posing for selfies with fans. He is scheduled to speak at the Democratic Wing Ding fundraiser Friday night in Clear Lake.
That event, a celebrated platform for presidential hopefuls and rising stars alike, hosted Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in 2015. Then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama headlined the event during his first run for president in 2007.

(7,220 posts)What is it with these people with ZERO public service experience looking at the hardest job on the planet and thinking "oh yeah, I can do that for sure!"

(34,115 posts)Avenatti attended Saint Louis University for a year before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a B.A. in political science in 1996. In 1999, he earned a Juris Doctor from George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., where he worked with Professor Jonathan Turley on constitutional issues relating to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). He graduated Order of the Coif and first in his class.[8] In 2003, George Washington University Law School established the Michael J. Avenatti Award for Excellence in Pre-Trial and Trial Advocacy, an annual award given to the member of the graduating Juris Doctor class who demonstrates excellence in pre-trial and trial advocacy. Avenatti also received George Washington University's prestigious Alumni Recognition Award in 2010.[21]
Career
While in college and later in law school, Avenatti worked at The Research Group, a political opposition research and media firm run by Rahm Emanuel (later White House Chief of Staff for President Barack Obama, and Mayor of Chicago).[22] Avenatti worked on over 150 Democratic and Republican campaigns in 42 states while studying at George Washington University.

(29,322 posts)He definitely has political experience probably more than as an attorney which many Presidents in fact were.

Were there others?
We need some growl. He knows he won't win. Just because he has no experience doesn't mean he would be as bad as Trump.

(9,291 posts)Let's see what you have to offer. At least you fight, you could take on Trump and piss him off. If he's still around at that time frame.
All we can say is no.

(5,449 posts)I've enjoyed his trolling of Trump, but let's not kid ourselves of what his real motives were / are. Michael Avenatti loves Michael Avenatti.
Luckily, I sincerely doubt our party would ever be that desperate.

(28,673 posts)He did work with Joe Biden and thats a lot more experience than Dump and not that much less than Obama.
If somehow he won the nomination I would vote for him.
Either way I find him articulate, quick witted, smart and pretty easy on the eyes to very many of us.

(4,410 posts)Thats an extremely low bar. I would be more competent than Trump and believe me when I say I should not be anyones first or 100th choice for President.
On edit, maybe 101st.

(37,648 posts)I marvel at how some don't realize how difficult it is to campaign for the Presidency, much less win it, in the U.S. You don't START in politics by running for President, and expect to win. So I guess he'll keep running until he wins. Or he will use it just to gain more fame and money...national fame opens the money gate. Contracts with networks as a pundit, books, guest speaker fees.
He's a unique person and is a decidedly attractive package in many ways. Easy on the eyes, articulate, passionate, smart, fast thinker, good debater on tv show, energetic. But....well, now that I think about it, the country could do worse. Much worse. Interesting. (But he's kind of not on the level in some ways. Which makes him....a politician?)

(29,322 posts)Looks like we are heading to '16 Republican style primary with 18 candidates, the winner could get 20% of the vote. I have a feeling we're gonna be drowning in candidates.

(249 posts)He's smart, witty, won't take any crap and he is a lawyer. One million times better that what is there now, mind you it doesn't take much to be better than Trump! Who ever it is that runs against the existing guy, he/she has to have no fear of telling it like it is! IMO!
A Trump kind of person that doesn't lie, isn't vain, very smart and actually knows his stuff and hasn't committed any crimes, oh, and is with the same woman he originally married!! Then I will be watching!!
