John McCain Will No Longer Be Treated for Brain Cancer, Family Says
Source: NY Times
WASHINGTON Senator John McCain of Arizona, who has been battling brain cancer for more than a year, will no longer be treated for his condition, his family announced on Friday, a sign that the Republican war hero is most likely entering his final days.
Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: He had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious. In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict, the family said in a statement. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment.
Mr. McCain had been undergoing treatment since July 2017, and has been absent from Washington since December. Mr. McCains family has gathered in Arizona, and people close to him say his death is imminent.
From his ranch in Arizona, Mr. McCain had managed to maintain a voice in key foreign policy and military policy debates, sharply criticizing President Trump after his summit meeting with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, an old adversary of Mr. McCain. At home, he has welcomed close friends to renew ties. But after decades as a fixture in Washington and a larger-than-life character, he had largely retreated from the public eye.

(6,911 posts)But I've always fallen on the side of him being a patriot, with occasional bouts of brain issues that made him side with the dumbest Republican ideas sometimes. But he would always show backbone so I gave him some room sometimes.
I think he's proven us right to think, despite being a pain in the ass sometimes, he is a true patriot. Especially when you factor in his service and POW torture, he's paid the price to say what the fuck he wants in my book.
And I will respect him for it even when we disagree. He stood up for Obama in a way that no other Republican did or has since. That proves he has the courage to be more loyal to America than the Republican party.

(58,785 posts)to duty were admirable but used up before he became a U.S. senator.
He's been a major player in the increasing decline of the Republican Party into intense corruption, serving business and betraying the people he's supposed to serve, for over three decades now.
He spent 10 years telling every audience he spoke to that the ACA was too flawed to succeed, knowing every word was a lie as he prepared them to have it taken away. He only did a little part of what he should have when he knew his career in politics was ending and it wouldn't require any personal sacrifice. That he is not one of the extremist true believers like Pence and Kavanaugh in the virtuous union of religion and business makes his behavior worse to me.
Nevertheless, his family knows him for his other side, and I wish him an easy death and them acceptance and happy memories.
Over the course of Judge Kavanaugh's impressive legal career, he has built a reputation as a fair, independent, and mainstream judge who has earned widespread respect from his peers. One of the Senate's highest constitutional responsibilities is to provide advice and consent on nominations to the Supreme Court, and I look forward to the Senate fulfilling this critical duty through a fair and thorough confirmation process," ~ John McCain
I did have some hope that he might have somehow shown up on a hospital bed to vote for what's right, but the chances were very poor in both respects.

(20,998 posts)...and believe me, I do. I have NEVER, EVER once questioned his patriotism or his love of this Country.
I made a point of speaking up and speaking out when I moved back to Arizona at the end of 2015. I received personal responses several times from Senator McCain.
My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends.

(54,341 posts)I suspect he would have expressed his "reservations" and then voted to confirm. But to get in a last dig at Trump, whom he despised, he would have voted no. Not the noblest of reasons, but fine with me, all the same.

(6,547 posts)My sincerest sympathy to his family. From the song "On the Wings of an Eagle" by John Denver:
"Oh, my home is in the mountains, I am free, I am free.
I am one with wind and eagles, I am free. Given wings to sail in gracefulness, the sky, the sky.
Given a voice to sing in breathlessness, I find that I can fly, fly away.
In the hands of my father, in the light of the sunshine. On the wings of an eagle, I'm flying again.
I'm flying again, I'm flying again, I'm flying again, I'm flying again. "
Peace!

(11,141 posts)Sen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.
I congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they've achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead. - BHO
