KS congressman: Farmers are 'such great patriots' they'll ride out Trump trade woes
Source: KansasCityStar
Despite the short-term pain theyre experiencing because of President Donald Trumps efforts to renegotiate trade deals and add tariffs to some imports, farmers are still supportive, U.S. Rep. Roger Marshall said Thursday.
Marshall, a Republican representing Kansas 1st District, was in Kansas City on Thursday and offered his support to Trump despite concerns that the presidents trade policy has had an adverse effect on farmers. The issue is something Marshall said he hears about constantly when hes in his district.
Its been a long summer, Ive got to tell you, Marshall said. And this has really impacted not just my agriculture producers but a lot of people in manufacturing. Its impacting every consumer for many reasons.
Despite that, Marshall said, farmers in his district havent abandoned Trump. He said they understand Trumps perspective when Marshall talks about problems the U.S. has with trading partners respect for intellectual property and tariff imbalances.

(7,725 posts)to sacrifice their savings on the alter of "patriotism" ala the Iraq war years w every single American who questioned the war...If you did, you werent a Patriot. Fuck these people and their mantras. Stay tuned for words like..."values" "christian country" "fiscal responsibility" "austerity" "budget pay-fors" and every other GD thing they throw up when theyre done raiding the budget and are afraid someone else will benefit from the tax revenue while they aren't in power. They need to be nailed down from 'jump' when they try to start leaning on us with those words. Right from the beginning they need to be called out and demonized for trying to ramp up the piety bit.

(19,187 posts)it a "patriot dividend". They'll come up with some half-assed term like that should anyone accuse the farmers of taking government welfare. Why is it always the fascist right that gets to frame the debate on these things? I guess it's because Democrats don't hit hard enough, or at all.

(17,884 posts)American ag organizations have worked over decades to develop these overseas markets, just to see all that hard work get blown up. Either this idiot has no idea how the ag economy works or he's a fucking liar. Maybe both. The only ones who will benefit from this idiocy are farmers in Brazil, Argentina, etc. etc. Winning a customer is hard. Losing a customer is easy. Winning back a customer is even harder if not impossible.
