Israel has threatened to attack any Iranian military assets in Iraq as it has done in Syria, following reports Tehran has moved ballistic missiles closer to the Jewish state.
Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's defence minister, signalled on Monday it would contend with Iranian provocations wherever they are found
"We are certainly monitoring everything that is happening in Syria, and regarding Iranian threats we are not limiting ourselves just to Syrian territory. This also needs to be clear," Mr Lieberman told a conference in Jerusalem.
Asked if this included Iraq, he responded: "I am saying that we will contend with any Iranian threat, and it doesn't matter from where it comes ...
Tehran has transferred dozens of short-range ballistic missiles to Shia proxies in Iraq over the last few months, according to a Reuters report published over the weekend.

Iran is 90% Shi'a.

15-20% Sunni;
17% Kurdish.

What a mess. The whole region. Far more wiser men (and women) have tried to resolve differences for generations and with no avail. Perhaps one day they'll want peace, a serious substantial peace (we all do)...

(11,949 posts)Everyone seems to fear the Kurds. And the Kurds fight them all.
In a just world they would have their own state. But not our job to make it happen. Besides, give them a real nation with a real military and I am guessing their state would grow. They are flat out badasses and their neighbors all know it. When you are feared by Iran, Turkey, Iraq and Syria and you do not even have a state? That says something.
I guess they all remember that Salidin was Kurdish.

(3,051 posts)Is "tribe".
Tribalism still is the real form of government and social organization in most of the world.
The nation-state is a construct of the West, adopted, with varying levels of success, throughout the world.
Sometimes, the two overlap a lot: Japan, for example. It's a giant tribe (with some increasingly muted internal ethnic differences) and a nation.
The USA was probably the best at combating tribalism internally, but we're increasingly falling back into the bad habits of the countries from whence we fled.
Rah Rah America Patriotism is annoying as fuck, but it's way better than tribalism (although it is tribalism on a national level) where it's nigh impossible to travel out of your neighborhood.
