After being approached with a handshake by Fred Guttenberg, the father of Jamie Guttenberg, one of 17 people killed in the shooting massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February, Brett Kavanaugh appeared to ignore the gesture and walk away, videos and photos show.

Fred Guttenberg (L), father of Parkland, Florida, shooting victim Jaime Guttenberg, tries to speak with Judge Brett Kavanaugh as he leaves for a break during his US Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing to be an Associate Justice on the US Supreme Court, on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, September 4, 2018. President Donald Trumps newest Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is expected to face punishing questioning from Democrats this week over his endorsement of presidential immunity and his opposition to abortion. UPDATE:
Parkland Dad corrects Sarah Sanders for issuing incorrect White House statement on Kavanaugh handshake refusal

Kavanaugh shunned Guttenbergs attempted handshake.
Just walked up to Judge Kavanaugh as morning session ended, Guttenberg tweeted. Put out my hand to introduce myself as Jaime Guttenbergs dad. He pulled his hand back, turned his back to me and walked away. I guess he did not want to deal with the reality of gun violence.
White House Principal Press Secretary Raj Shaw disputed Guttenbergs account.
As Judge Kavanaugh left for his lunch break, an unidentified individual approached him. Before the Judge was able to shake his hand, security had intervened, Shaw claimed.
Incorrect, Guttenberg replied. I was here all day and introduced by Senator Feinstein. No security involved.
He turned and walked away, he added.

(57,370 posts)Kavanaugh doesn't know what's on the mind of someone who walks up to him at this hearing. I think I'd head off in the opposite direction too.

(35,293 posts)Otherwise there's no "security" just a bunch of people who serve as security. I can't expect them to have exchanged pictures and backgrounds among themselves for instant memorization of all those who attended.
One person let him in.
The man went up to Kavanaugh. Why? There's a question. But Kavanaugh was apparently called to because he turned around. He stopped. He looked at the man and I didn't see his expression change from "who are you and why are you bothering me?" Perhaps he believed what the man said; perhaps not. Perhaps he thought there was some political point to be made and didn't know what to make of it; perhaps not. If I were him I'd have expected a harangue or argument, not just a quick handshake; in other words, a situation which, once entered into, would have to end badly. Of course, ending the situation early would also end badly. In Russian this would have been called a "provokatsiya"; in this case, something like a photo op but one that served a political point for those opposing you. It would have had to end badly because for it to go otherwise Kavanaugh would have had to commit to the father's agenda, and that would constitute bias on the part of the judge or, later, been interpreted as hypocrisy. Again, lose/lose, catch-22.
Nonetheless, the few-second non-exchange was ended when a security person intervened. So while the Parkland father may have been there all day, the exchange was, indeed, interrupted by either security or a handler or a two-in-one person. Kavanaugh could have overridden his security, no doubt, but probably had other things to do.

(62,269 posts)I wouldn't blame him tbh, he knows that he's the most sleazy nomination in ages, and he knows that it's all cronyism. His last appointment was rife with the same crap.
But he'll get the seat pretty effortlessly. He's quite literally a perfect candidate as far as qualifications are concerned.

(11,885 posts)And this Supreme Court scam is about to come to a head if he's exposed for any dirty money he's taken from russia's putin. That may be why they are hiding so much of his stuff now. If cheeto picked him , its for a clear reason why, is he's under putin's control ?
I read where the NRA spent a boat load of money pushing for Kavanaugh. They should be proud of him.
