Guatemalan Families Sue Trump Officials Over Family Separation
Source: The Daily Beast
Two Guatemalan families filed suit Wednesday against 12 Trump administration officials, including Jeff Sessions, John Kelly, and Kirstjen Nielsen, for violating their due-process rights and discriminating against South and Central Americans during their implementation of the presidents family-separation policy for immigrants, The Boston Globe reports. Both of the families now live in Massachusetts, and are seeking damages to start a mental-health fund for therapy. In the lawsuit, one mother claims her children were kept in a freezing room and physically abused after her family was separated. The other adult plaintiff, a father, claims his son has been besieged with nightmares after their own 36-day separation. The Globe notes the lawsuit is believed to be the first claim for compensation from the families of the more than 2,500 immigrant children who were separated from their families under the administrations zero-tolerance policy. This lawsuit is about holding public officials accountable for the overwhelming devastation that they wreaked, said one of the lawyers involved in the suit.
