The Latest: Trump wants Sessions to investigate op-ed writer

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump and an anonymous op-ed in The New York Times (all times local):

12:25 p.m.

President Donald Trump says Attorney General Jeff Sessions should investigate the identity of the author of an anonymous New York Times opinion piece.

Trump says in an interview Friday with reporters aboard Air Force One that he believes the opinion piece critical of his leadership is a “national security” issue.

Asked if he would take any action against the Times, Trump says “we’re going to see, I’m looking at that right now.” ... Adds Trump: “We’re going to take a look at what he had, what he gave, what he’s talking about also where he is right now.”

Trump says if the person had a high-level security clearance, “I don’t want him in those meetings.” ... Trump reiterated that it was a “disgrace” that the Times would publish the piece.

Trump says Justice Department should investigate who wrote anonymous New York Times op-ed, citing national security, AP reports

By Washington Post Staff

September 7 at 12:37 PM

The op-ed, published online Wednesday, was written by a senior official in the Trump administration, according to the Times. It depicts a “two-track presidency” in which President Trump acts according to his own whims while many of his top aides, in the author’s words, work to thwart his “more misguided impulses until he is out of office.”

Trump said the investigation was needed for national security reasons. It is unclear what law he believes was broken.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

What law or statute would even be hypothetically, supposedly, allegedly at issue here? Even IF such a violation were to be investigated or found, what violation are we talking about?

The DOJ isn't in the business of investigation things just because the President or public are curious and want to know something. They are in the business of investigating (potential) violations of the law. What was in that op-ed that could be construed as violating the law, and what law?

Oh, I forgot there is no such law and the president does not pass laws. You would have to have a basic understanding of the constitution to realize that.

so there's no basis for investigating or prosecuting them. He will tell Spanky he can't do it. That will give Spanky another excuse to fire him.

Doesn't even acknowledge a first amendment right.

My take on the national security issue? It's rump that's causing a national security issue, no one else.
Who knows by now all of the secrets, classified materials, etc. that he passed along to Putin in his one on one meeting (and the Russian ambassador too).

Li'l Jeffy could say "OK", spend a week, and just say "Whoever did it really covered their tracks well."

Or he could do like Paul Newman in Absence of Malice. "I said i'd ask around". "What did you find out?'' "Nothing. Nobody wants to talk about it."
