Collins' office received 3,000 coat hangers protesting Kavanaugh

Source: The Hill

BY TAL AXELROD - 09/08/18 12:43 PM EDT

Activists have sent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) three thousand coat hangers, referencing back-alley abortions, in their efforts to persuade her to vote against the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

The mail-ins accompany TV ads aimed at swaying the senator’s vote and pledges to fund her Senate opponent in 2020 if she votes to confirm Kavanaugh, the Associated Press reports.

The centrist Collins is seen as a critical swing vote in Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing and has said she wouldn’t vote to confirm a nominee who was hostile to Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that legalized abortions.

She said Kavanaugh during a meeting told her he considered the case to be established precedent. However, critics are concerned about a recently revealed email from 2003, from when Kavanaugh worked in the Bush administration, shows Kavanaugh said the Supreme Court “can always overrule its precedent.”

A Collins spokesperson told the AP the email didn’t change the senator’s mind about what Kavanaugh had told her.

“I always wait until after the hearings are complete before making a decision, and I’ll do so in this case as well,” Collins, who has never voted against a Supreme Court nominee, told The Associated Press in an interview.

I will vote for her in October, but I will be holding my nose.

My other Senator is Roy Blunt and I'm hoping against hope that the party will find/allow a progressive Dem to run against Blunt!

Manchin and Heitkamp will only vote to confirm if their votes make no difference. If faced with being the swing votes that deny Kavanaugh a seat on the SCOTUS, they will stand with their party, i.e. if 2 Republicans vote no, so will they.

8. The Fund to unseat Collins 2020 started by Ady Barkan is now over $752,000.

Sept. 6. 'Fund to Unseat Susan Collins in 2020 Climbs to $500,000 as Leaked Doc Offers New Evidence Kavanaugh Clear Threat to Roe v. Wade,' by Julia Conley, Common Dreams. "Kavanaugh not only believes Supreme Court precedent can 'always' be overturned, he said Roe v. Wade is not settled law. This directly contradicts what he's said in his hearing—but confirms what we already knew. What else is he hiding?"

Demanding that Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) face consequences should she vote to confirm anti-choice extremist Judge Brett Kavanaugh for a lifetime appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, healthcare activist Ady Barkan has successfully raised more than $500,000 for whomever challenges the 4-term senator in 2020, should she vote for approval.

"This nomination is about more than just a position on the Supreme Court," Barkan said. "It is about the future of this country. I believe in a future in which we can all be free. That's why I am calling on each Senator to Be a Hero, #CancelKavanaugh." Barkan began his "Be A Hero" fundraiser after Kavanaugh's nomination was announced in July, asking Americans to pledge $20.20 to go to Collins's challenger, should she vote for the judge. Should she vote no, the funds would be returned to the millions of Americans who have donated. **Fund Website:

- Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) appeared satisfied with Kavanaugh's statement last month that Roe vs. Wade is "settled law"—but revelations in hearings have shown that he believes the law could be overruled by the Supreme Court.

12. I can never understand why a Democrat would vote with the fascists

all that does is keep Dem voters from bothering to vote and repugs would never vote for them to begin with. Does more harm than good.

It's easy to ignore a box full of petitions, but I'm sure she knows about the hangers, even if she just reads about them in the news. If she has any conscience about driving abortions into back alleys, she saw the issue testify all week.
