Trump denies official estimates of Hurricane Maria deaths in Puerto Rico: '3000 people did not die'

Source: RawStory

President Donald Trump on Thursday issued a denial that 3,000 people in Puerto Rico died as a result of Hurricane Maria in 2017.

“3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000…”

because whole swaths of Puerto Rico were cut off and unable to communicate, so official death totals could not be compiled in a timely fashion.

And know that power was off for months. Where were all of the people when so many building were destroyed? Did all of the emergency generators provide power to hospitals for months? Just after the storm, they didn't have time or equipment needed to search all of those destroyed buildings.

.....This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico. If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list. Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!

His own government denied 2300 applications for funeral assistance from the storm and only approved 76. So they know damn well that at a minimum 2376 people died and still he lies. He's not lying due to lack of information or stupidity, it's either just lying to try and cover up his utter lack of humanity or lying out of deliberate and wilful ignorance.

But as always, if his orange assmouth or orange tiny little fingers are moving, he's lying. Just pisses me off that the media were so awful at covering this. They could have gone up in the mountains and shown the devastation, but they didn't. They only hung around the few areas on the coast with electricity and food and were way to quickly out of there, letting this enormous story go uncovered. For shame on both, but of course this was caused by drumpfs racism and refusing to stop the rule that no ships could deliver goods to PR without first coming to the USA - raising the shippers profits astronomically and doing the same to the price of goods, making them unaffordable for many residents. FEMA's policies and wrong headed administrator killed the recovery by demanding that only their trucks be used and refusing to use others, cutting the response down to a trickle when it could have been a flood of people helping. It's just so tragic how murderous and awful our government has become under the Russian Repugs.

During a press conference on October 3, 2017, President Donald Trump applauded the low death toll—at the time the government only certified 16 deaths—and claimed it was nothing like the "catastrophe" caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. San Juan Mayor Yulín Cruz harshly criticized Trump as "killing [Puerto Ricans] with the inefficiency [of relief efforts]. Following the visit by Trump, concerns over political motivations in the handling of relief efforts surged. The magnitude of devastation proved to be an unprecedented challenge for relief efforts by the Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA. Senator Kamala Harris claimed that "the government failed Puerto Rico at every level in the wake of Hurricane Maria".

Between September 20 and October 18, the island's only medical examiner authorized 911 bodies for cremation; however, they were not physically examined and simply given "natural causes" as the cause of death.[15] Official statistics showed increases of about 20% and 27% in overall fatalities in Puerto Rico during September 2017, compared to 2016 and 2015, followed by a decrease of about 10% in October 2017 compared to the previous two Octobers.

snip

Through at least June 2018, hundreds of unclaimed bodies remained in morgues, and the island's primary morgue was "overflowing" with them.[13] A total of 307 bodies were stored at the San Juan morgue and four refrigerators in a nearby lot. Staff shortages resulting from budget cuts further complicated the situation as bodies were unable to be processed in a timely fashion.
