President Donald Trumps nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is in turmoil after the woman accusing him of high school-era sexual misconduct told her story publicly for the first time.
Democrats are calling for a delay in a key committee vote set for Thursday. And a Republican on the panel, Arizonas Jeff Flake, says hes not comfortable voting on the nomination without first hearing from the accuser.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa is trying to arrange separate, follow-up calls with Kavanaugh and accuser Christine Blasey Ford before the vote, but just for aides to top members.
The panels ranking Democrat, Californias Dianne Feinstein, is rejecting that plan, saying theres more that senators dont know.

(14,697 posts)other people might have a different opinion?
Do you not have the right to comment on the fallacies in each others positions?
Or is only your opinion the one that matters?
Hmm, hadn't considered that. I guess I withdraw my differing opinion of you not liking differing opinions.

(4,066 posts)Did I say anywhere in my post that people are not entitled to an opinion other than mine. No, I didn't. In fact, I encourage opinions other than mine. I frequently learn a lot from other people who disagree with me.
On edit: In fact, I was actually supporting the person who had the differing opinion against the criticism from the other poster.

(4,341 posts)And my thoughts match yours, if there is more then lets hear of it, don't let it drag until Thursday comes and then it is too late.
Democrats are in the minority so they have to push extra hard to make things happen, the more the public knows the harder it will make it for republicans to push their agenda, although I do understand that they have no principles and they may still try to go ahead with their plans, but nonetheless, bring all that information to the clear, let everyone know what you know.

(61,588 posts)Our only hope to stop this confirmation is to drag out the hearings past the midterms. The Republicans are trying to fast track it.
If we show all our cards now, the Republicans will do what they do and brush it all aside. Feinstein's strategy is a drip drip drip, creating new problems for the Republicans day by day.

(32,620 posts)... the night before hearings began. It takes time to look into these emails and meeting notes, and they're investigating everything. These are serious matters and once he's appointed - he's on the bench for LIFE!
Most of us have seen enough already, we're dead certain that Kavanaugh should never be on the SCOTUS bench. He doesn't even belong in the same building.

I wonder if it's better to stonewall him before he gets in, or if it's better to bring all this out after he gets in and ruin his credibility forever?

(61,588 posts)The credibility of a Supreme Court Justice doesn't matter. They're appointed for life and he'll never step down. He'll be on the bench for decades making horrible decisions that affect our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren. We have to stop his confirmation now.

All hands on deck, all weapons at the ready. Fire away.
Does Clarence Thomas have any credibility? His credibility doesn't change things one bit.

I'm calling Collins, Murkowski, Flake & Corker today. I'm going to remind Collins of her harsh statement against Al Franken & her two-facedness if she votes to confirm this horrid nominee. She won't give a rats ass, but I'm still calling.

(11,238 posts)Then she gave an interview to WaPo, which acted like a little bombshell, and the story got traction. Now they are forced to pay attention, and they have to decide how to act. Yes, bringing all this out now is what will produce the biggest effect.
There are a lot of repercussions that will come out of whatever they do. The midterms coming up...whether to jettison Kavanaugh and try with another nominee in the lame duck session...what will the political fallout be, whichever course they follow? Repubs have to game a lot out.

(6,831 posts)Do you know ANYONE who is 85 that tolerates being told what to do ?
My mother is 85. She thinks she knows everything. She is never wrong. She never apologizes. Tell her that she is incorrect about something and she flies into a rage. She cannot tolerate being told she is mistaken. It can be terrifying. She wasn't like this 10 years ago.
I suspect Grassley is just like this. Orrin Hatch, too. These two fossilized old turds should have been put out to pasture long ago.
There should be an age limit on public service. Anyone remember Strom Thurman ? Robert Byrd ? Joe Arpaio ?
There comes a time when elderly people need to take a back seat and enjoy their golden years. By the time they reach 85, most (but not all) are completely out of touch with the majority of Americans, especially the youth in the country. We have seen this time and time again, especially as it relates to sexual abuse. When you cannot relate to over 70% of the country, that should be your first clue that maybe it is time for a younger person to have the opportunity that you are now squandering because you refuse to relinquish the power.
Know when it's time to move along and allow progress to take its rightful place.
