GOP tries to portray Biden as governing liability
Sunday September 2, 2012, 11:43 AM

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Republicans have a new rhetorical punching bag: Vice President Joe Biden.

With relentless attacks aimed at portraying President Barack Obama's running mate as a governing liability, Republicans hope to raise the stature of GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, who will debate Biden next month, and score points in closely contested states such as Ohio, Florida and New Hampshire.

"Paul's a close friend, a great family man, and he's got a reformer's heart," Ohio Sen. Rob Portman said at last week's Republican convention in Tampa, Fla. "Contrast this to Joe Biden. Vice President Biden has told people out of work to 'just hang in there' — so much for 'hope and change.'"

As Democrats prepare for their convention in Charlotte, N.C., the GOP is casting the 69-year-old former Delaware senator as a gaffe-prone crazy uncle who's hung around the political scene too long. The strategy tries to undermine the Obama campaign's chief surrogate and liaison to white, working-class voters and seniors, influential groups courted aggressively by both parties. At the same time, Republicans hopes that sullying Biden's image will help confirm Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman, as a deep thinker destined to take on many of the nation's most pressing challenges.

everyone can identify with -- at least one son served in the military. Didn't Biden serve too?

A really heartrending life story, a lovely wife.

A warm, beautiful human being and a great asset to the Obama administration.

People don't like Romney, and they like Ryan even less.

The Republicans are just jealous that we have Biden.

This is a typical Rove ploy: attacking the opponents' strengths. Biden is one of ours.

I want to know what Ryan was thinking when he claimed he ran a "two fifty something" marathon when his actual time was just over 4 hours. Is this a prime example of his "deep thinking". More like he is deep into denial.

Deep thinker my eye. It's like someone is trying to hand a tag on him to make him seem different than he is. A deep thinker would not advocate cutting taxes on the wealthy and clashing services for the poor and vulnerable......

This man has shown he is highly capable. Sadly, the GOP think that a few little "gaffes" are all he's about. As usual, they haven't been paying attention because they're so stuck in their little, self-created reality bubble. VP Biden has a refreshing honestly and most people love him. To compare him to someone like Ryan is an insult.

Lyin Ryan has been an abysmal failure as VP candidate, not helping much to move the ball for Romney and lying through his teeth. Therefore, the Republicans have project their failures onto Biden. Don't let them get away with it!!

People who live in glass houses with lie-and-hypocrisy-prone vice presidental candidates shouldn't throw stones.

If that's all you've got to hit Biden with, Portman, you're WAY out of your league -- get your ass off the field and "walk on home, boy!"

Just two years ago, they summarily fired an innocent worker because of a doctored video. They wanted to reach across the aisle more than doing sound policy. And it hurt them.

Now, they are standing up to the GOP, and the GOOP is completely confused. How dare they not cave? How dare they not apologize for stating a factual truth? How dare they go on the attack? It is so . . . . . UNFAIR!

The reason that they target Biden is precisely because he is so successful.
