Gunmen have opened fire on an Iranian military parade in the south-western city of Ahvaz, killing at least 24 people, including civilians, and injuring more than 50, state media say.

The attackers shot from a park near the parade and were wearing military uniforms, reports say.

An anti-government Arab group, Ahvaz National Resistance, and Islamic State (IS) have both claimed the attack.

The foreign minister has blamed "terrorists paid by a foreign regime".

They're not nation-states. There's a dominant ethnicity with other, smaller ethnicities that are subject to them. The dominant language is the primary language, all others may have some (scant) right to use their language, but higher education, government, etc., are in the dominant language. There's a dominant culture, etc., etc.

They're rump empires.

The SW is Arab. The SE is Baloch, and they have their own insurgency that flares up every few years. Iran always blames Pakistan for the Balochi attacks, but Pakistan has its own problem with self-determination (because it's also a chunk of empire "rump&quot . Iran's politics in Syria are also informed by desires on the part of its own Kurds to have full rights. (We insist that "Persian" and "Iranian" are synonyms, but Kurds in Iran are Iranians, not Persian.)

If and when the Saudis and Iran go at it face-to-face, it could become a proxy, or even hot, war between the US and Russia. What happens then, given the C-in-C of the US Armed Forces is a suspected Russian asset?

Arab Shi’a.

Iranians are also starting to get a rough time from Arab Shi’ites in Southern Iraq. Arab Shi’ites are a majority in Southern Iraq, Iran’s Khuzestan province and Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.

This could get quite messy.
