At United Nations, Trump rejects constraints imposed by other nations, says U.S. will act to counter

UNITED NATIONS — President Trump declared Tuesday that his administration will reject attempts from other nations to impose constraints on the United States, vowing to take action in world affairs based on his judgment over how it would benefit Americans.

In a speech before world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, Trump issued sharp warning to the leaders Iran, Syria, Venezuela and China over what he described as their rogue behavior. But the president also made clear that the United States under his leadership would not be bound in its affairs by the consensus among traditional allies and partners.

“The U.S. will always choose independence and cooperation over global governance, control and domination,” Trump said. “I honor the right of every nation in this room to pursue own customs, beliefs and traditions. The United States will not tell you how to live or work or worship. We only ask that you honor our sovereign rights in return.”

The president’s remarks were aimed, aides said, at elevating the theme of “American sovereignty,” and Trump wasted little time in declaring that he has made progress on an agenda he has called “America first.” That view did not necessarily have much support from the leaders from the U.N.’s 192 other countries, however.

I wonder if trump was planning to take off his shoe during this statement. Seriously tho, this statement is as dangerous as it is naive.

I think he is really referring to the global rule of law, including Interpol and the intelligence agencies of our closest allies, all of whom have given our intelligence agencies vital crime-fighting information through the years, just as we have shared vital information with them. In the case of Trump, this has also meant our allies turning over to our intelligence agencies vital information about the activities of Russian mobsters and their US cohorts. I really think this is what he is seeking to destroy, while packaging it as 'American sovereignty'. I never take anything he says literally; there always seems to be another agenda, one that always seems to benefit Vladimir Putin ('look, squirrel!!', as he pulls the rug out from under yet another essential American institution).

The UN was created to attain a higher purpose. There is a time and place to promote American business. But nations participate in the UN to be heard, many smaller countries that would have no voice at all, to find consensus, to get together on important issues like climate change. Whether you may think it gets hijacked by blocks of various countries or not, it is still, at its core, about give and take. To find solutions that benefit all, or at least most, on the planet.

There is, or was, a great respect for the American spirit of ingenuity, of personal achievement, self determination, through the decades. But Trump is abusing that ideal. Turning it into a #mefirst doctrine. The Ugly American on full display.

We now have an American Enterprise Institute lunatic directing White House foreign policy.

The issue came to a head in the Department of State in July 2002. To Bolton, that was conclusive evidence of cheating, as he said, “I wanted a decisive conclusion that the Agreed Framework was dead.” To others, like Assistant Secretary of State for Asian and Pacific Affairs James Kelly, what mattered for US national security was when the enrichment plant would start operating and how long it would take to generate enough highly enriched uranium for a weapon. Bolton recalls, “Kelly responded that there was still disagreement about exactly when North Korea would have enough highly enriched uranium to make a warhead, which was true but irrelevant to the point that the DPRK was violating the Agreed Framework.”[1] Those who assessed that it would take a full decade for the plant to become operational turned out to be correct. Shattering the Agreed Framework prompted North Korea to restart its 5 MWe reactor at Yongbyon and resume reprocessing plutonium to fuel its first handful of nuclear weapons.

Even worse, when Kelly went to Pyongyang in October 2002, North Korea put its enrichment effort on the negotiating table,...

The situation he was instrumental in creating is now his alleged legal basis for striking North Korea first:

Although the Caroline criteria are often cited in pre-emption debates, they are merely customary international law, which is interpreted and modified in light of changing state practice. In contemporary times, Israel has already twice struck nuclear-weapons programs in hostile states: destroying the Osirak reactor outside Baghdad in 1981 and a Syrian reactor being built by North Koreans in 2007.

This is how we should think today about the threat of nuclear warheads delivered by ballistic missiles. In 1837 Britain unleashed pre-emptive “fire and fury” against a wooden steamboat. It is perfectly legitimate for the United States to respond to the current “necessity” posed by North Korea’s nuclear weapons by striking first.

Nineteenth Century British imperialism is Bolton's model for 21st Century international affairs. Yesterday, at the UN press conference with Secretary Pompeo and Ambassador Halley, Bolton was asked isn't the US policy regime change of Iran? Bolton responded, "As I have said repeatedly, regime change in Iran is not the administration's policy." However, it is clearly Mr. Bolton's policy. In January 2018 he wrote:

" No fix will remedy the diplomatic Waterloo Mr. Obama negotiated."

"Most important, there is no evidence Iran’s intention to obtain deliverable nuclear weapons has wavered. None of the proposed “fixes” change this basic, unanswerable reality."

"America’s declared policy should be ending Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution before its 40th anniversary."

"Recognizing a new Iranian regime in 2019 would reverse the shame of once seeing our diplomats held hostage for 444 days. The former hostages can cut the ribbon to open the new U.S. Embassy in Tehran."

Beyond the Iran Nuclear Deal, US policy should be to end the Islamic Republic before its 40th anniversary, John R. Bolton, January 15, 2018
