WASHINGTON President Trump said on Wednesday that he wants to keep in place the deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, amid speculation about Mr. Rosensteins future, which was thrust into doubt by revelations that he had discussed secretly taping the president and removing him from office.
The two were scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss Mr. Rosensteins comments, which were revealed in a New York Times article last week, prompting Mr. Rosenstein to tell senior White House aides over the weekend that he was considering resigning.
Asked during a news conference at the United Nations whether he planned to fire Mr. Rosenstein, Mr. Trump said, I would certainly prefer not doing that.
Mr. Trump added: "Weve had a good talk. He says he never said it, he doesnt believe it, he gets a lot of respect from me. Hes very nice, and well see.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would much prefer not firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, after reports indicated last week that Rosenstein had discussed secretly recording Trump and the using the 25th Amendment to remove him from office last year.
He said he never said it, Trump said at a press conference, referring to Rosensteins denials of the news reports. He said he doesnt believe it. He said he has a lot of respect for me. And he was very nice, and well see.
Hes a member of the Trump administration, in that sense, its the Justice Department, Trump added. I would certainly prefer not doing that. There was no obstruction, Trump said, unless you call obstruction the fact that I fight back.
Trump said he might ask Rosenstein for a little bit of a delay on their meeting scheduled for Thursday, so that he can watch the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, whos accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault.
I would much prefer keeping Rod Rosenstein, much prefer, Trump added later.

(11,884 posts)He could trigger a lot of really , really bad things to happen to him and his family , and maybe it was hinted to him by someone, he could really blow things up if he were to fire him now. Rosenstein is a really smart guy , and so is Mueller, so i think they already looked at this a long time ago as a possible situation to defend against. Their is more people who have turned on trump , and are talking too. I would not be surprised if at least 2 or more family members are or will be turning and talking to Mueller soon also rather than go to prison . Everyone really hates him , a lot. Even his own family .
