Congressional Dems' lawsuit alleging Trump's private business violates the Constitution can proceed
Source: Washington Post
A federal judge on Friday gave the go-ahead to a lawsuit filed by 200 congressional Democrats against President Trump alleging that he has violated the Constitution by doing business with foreign governments while in office.
The lawsuit is based on the Constitutions emoluments clause, which bars presidents from taking payments from foreign states. Trumps business, which he still owns, has hosted foreign embassy events and visiting foreign officials at its downtown D.C. hotel.
The decision opens up yet another legal front for the president, who is now facing an array of inquiries into his business, his campaign and his charity.
Trump is already facing a separate emoluments suit filed by the attorneys general of Washington, D.C. and Maryland that is moving forward. In addition, he is contending with the ongoing special counsel investigation into Russian interference, a lawsuit from the New York Attorney General that alleged persistently illegal conduct at his charitable foundation, and a defamation lawsuit brought by former Apprentice contestant Summer Zervos.
In his ruling, Judge Emmet G. Sullivan wrote that the members of Congress appropriate seek relief in federal court because they have no way to address their concern about Trumps alleged violation of the emoluments clause with legislation.

(1,406 posts)Every indictment on Trump & the complicit GOP will be sent on too the S C for a "nothing to see here" verdict.
Counting on Kavanaugh to eventually deliver the innocent verdict.

(38,419 posts)Could be.... But, this sentence says it all.......
"The lawsuit is based on the Constitutions emoluments clause, which bars presidents from taking payments from foreign states. Trumps business, which he still owns, has hosted foreign embassy events and visiting foreign officials at its downtown D.C. hotel."
If Trump owns the business, and the business has taken payments from foreign states...and that is not hard to prove ............................................................................................................
then................................................................................................................................
Trump has violated the Constitution directly and clearly..!!!!!!!!!!!
It would not take an advanced math genius to figure that one out. Further, it is an easy one to understand.....
Trump still owns the business. The business takes money from foreign states. And Trump's business gets the money..repeat, Trump still owns the business.
Violation of the U.S. Constitution . Four easy to understand sentences...And, Trump and everyone else knows what it means. Trump cheated on the U.S. Constitution he swore to uphold....

(51,584 posts)something called The Emoluments Clauses two years ago. I always assumed that this was a given...you just don't do this as the US President, there are rules to follow. Period.
Silly wabbit, tricks are for... the GOP and other assorted sociopaths and rich, white men.
