President Trump said Friday he will sign an order authorizing an FBI background check into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Ive ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaughs file. As the Senate has requested, this update must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week, the president said in a statement.
The statement came after the Senate Judiciary Committee said it would ask Trump to open a supplemental background investigation of Kavanaugh over allegations of sexual assault, which he denies.

Like Benghazi?
Finding the truth is limited here.
Or does he mean not allowed to find anything detrimental to Kav?

(18,581 posts)Jeff Flake indicated that besides himself and the democrats on the Judicial Committee, there were other republicans who refused to pass Kavenaugh until the FBI investigates him. That means McConnell didn't have the votes to confirm either. Incredibly, I believe one of them was Ted Cruz, but Flake entered the motion because he's retiring this year anyway.
If Trump or McConnell try to hijack or obstruct the investigation those nays will be unlikely to confirm. I'm sure Trump considered giving Mark Judge a two week all expenses paid trip to Trump international Golf Club in Ireland until Lindsey Graham explained the situation to him. ...Slowly and with no big words.
I don't think they have any choice but to let Kavenaugh twist in the winds until he springs the perjury trap on himself. After the break, Trump will try to pick another clone to nominate, but I doubt any can fit the bill like Brett.

(6,881 posts)Two people swear 100% they're telling the truth. But one is lying. Yes, only Kav has any motive to lie. (Make sure to check Hillary's emails, of course) But he said he's a believer and swore to God. If he's proven to have lied, he won't just not get on the Court, he'll go to hell and bring down the whole Repub hypocrite machine with him.

That implies there has already been an investigation.
And since none of the acts of perversion and assault
were ever reported??

(5,584 posts)And already has a file for all his background checks. This will be an additional entry into that file.

Trump is a queer duck. Even HE figured out the optics looked bad here. This is his way of saving face.
Besides what's the sense of having a Justice that will be impeached, when you can be the hero by roasting him, and then ram through a far more conservative one in December?
IOW, no downside for Trump in doing this. Of course!
