The White House has authorized the F.B.I. to expand its abbreviated investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh by interviewing anyone it deems necessary as long as the review is finished by the end of the week, two people briefed on the matter said on Monday.
The new directive came in the last 24 hours after a backlash from Democrats, who criticized the White House for limiting the scope of the bureaus investigation into President Trumps nominee for the Supreme Court. The F.B.I. has already completed interviews with the four witnesses its agents were originally asked to talk to, the people said.
Mr. Trump said on Monday that he favored a comprehensive F.B.I. investigation and had no problem if the bureau wanted to question Judge Kavanaugh or even a third accuser who was left off the initial witness list if she seemed credible. His only concerns he said, were that the investigation be wrapped up quickly and that it take direction from the Senate Republicans who will determine whether Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed.
The F.B.I. should interview anybody that they want within reason, but you have to say within reason, Mr. Trump told reporters in the Rose Garden after an event celebrating a new trade deal with Canada and Mexico. But they should also be guided, and Im being guided, by what the senators are looking for.

(5,609 posts)earlier than expected, stating no adverse evidence has been found by the FBI, nothing to see here, we're taking the vote now. He has his marching orders from the WH: get Kavanaugh confirmed and seated on the SC as soon as possible, there are cases waiting to be heard.

(128,527 posts)AFTER he calls for and they go through a cloture vote (in this case only requiring a 51 vote majority). And if the same couple GOPers are not "comfortable" that "due diligence" was done (as Flake has termed it - and remember Flake would be a recipient of a copy of the report, so he is the chief hostage-taker), then there will be no final debate before a final vote until they get the go-ahead from at least 2 GOP Senators (assuming all Ds fall in line).

(5,609 posts)but whatever it takes and however it happens, they're determined to get 'er done. Despite the so-called undecided Senators who are supposedly still dithering, and I'm not so sure of that, odds are still in favor of confirmation.

(128,527 posts)if Turtle doesn't have the votes for this confirmation (or any legislation in general), then he will not call for a vote at that time until he gets the votes. Robinson basically said that he is bluffing at this point. Cornyn, who is on the committee, is also the Senate Majority Whip, so he will be in the best and closest position to get a feel for where they are.

(5,609 posts)but prefer to keep expectations low. I've lost a lot of hope so want to prepare for the worst, which is still likely at this time. If a miracle occurs then I'll be the among the first to shout hallelujah, but not counting on it.
