China probes 'gutter oil in medicine' claims

Chinese officials have told pharmaceutical firms to check their suppliers after claims that some have used "gutter oil" to make antibiotics, state-run media report.
Officials are looking into firms that reportedly use the cheaper gutter oil rather than the more expensive soy bean oil in the production process.
Gutter oil is reprocessed kitchen waste dredged from restaurant drains.

(299 posts)I'd also like to know how much of our medicine is coming from China. Abuse of oil is nothing new in China, they were using counterfit oil to cook in restaurants. With statistics showing that China will spend more on medicine over the next few years, I really hope they can eliminate this dangerous corner cutting from the production process.
