Voters still like Clint Eastwood

Source: Yahoo News

Clint Eastwood's bizarre speech at the Republican National Convention last week didn't go over so well with voters in Florida and North Carolina, but it didn't hurt his overall image, a pair of new polls show.

According to a survey conducted by Public Policy Polling, 41 percent of Floridians said they had a negative opinion of Eastwood's 12-minute improvised riff, which featured the 82-year-old Academy Award-winning actor and director pretending to have a conversation with an invisible President Obama, represented by an empty chair. In North Carolina, 44 percent of voters found Eastwood's speech to be in poor taste. (Thirty-six percent of voters in both Florida and North Carolina said they had a favorable opinion of Eastwood's stunt.)

But those same voters also said they nonetheless a favorable opinion of Eastwood. In Florida, 72 percent had a favorable opinion of Eastwood compared to 11 percent with a negative one. (That includes a majority of Democrats; 58 percent had a favorable opinion of him, while 20 percent negative.) In North Carolina, 71 percent had a favorable overall opinion of Eastwood, compared to 14 percent negative.

"Those are certainly numbers any politician would die for," PPP said.

for his movies, his politics suck, but he does make some pretty good movies, my all time favorite is The Outlaw Josey Wales.

He's also correct on a lot of issues that liberals value.

He misjudged his own ability to pull off the speech. He's just getting a little old. People become successful by taking chances and it doesn't always work out.

Like his movies, and even when tries to take a cheap shot at my President, he screws up and hits his own guy in the jaw. What's not to like?

But frankly, what's to like? Here's a redneck who insults the President of the USA on stage in very tasteless fashion.

Am I supposed to be impressed because he was so good at killing black men in a film? I don't think so!
Is that why he was on stage with the empty chair. I do think so!

But I just put him in the rank of rich republican who greedily wants to keep most of his money...

I didn't find it convincing in the least as an endorsement of Mitt Romney for president though and Eastwood's politics are far from being in lockstep from the GOP platform. He's pro gay rights, pro-choice, actually realizes global warming/climate change is scientific reality (hey that's better than most republicans that claim it's some sort of conspiracy). He even got a few digs at the wars during the speech.

I think he's a talented actor and director. An actor/director's political beliefs aren't going to dictate whether or not I'll judge their movies. Besides, aside from being some cheap red meat for the [mostly braindead] audience, I don't know how it changed any minds or actually had much cross over appeal...It was certainly an odd performance, rambling, and somewhat incoherent. I felt a little sad for him.

His act at the convention last week did nothing to change that. His movies are still great. Well, most of them anyway.

I can no longer watch any film that he has involved himself with. All I can think of is his throat slashing gesture and wonder if he wasn't famous, wouldn't he have had secret service all over his ass? Under W, he might have been shipped to GITMO to learn how to breathe underwater.
Maybe many years from now, after he is dead, I could forgive him. In the meantime, all of my Eastwood DVD's are going into the garbage.
