Trump Won't Block Saudi Arms Sales Over Journalist Jamal Khashoggi's Disappearance
Source: The Daily Beast
Donald Trump said he isnt considering withholding U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia, despite accusations that journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killedreportedly on orders from the kingdominside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Turkish officials say The Washington Post contributor, a frequent critic of Saudi policies, was killed by intel agents sent by the Saudis last week, but they havent provided direct evidence. Trump said he has a call arranged with Khashoggis fiancée, who has appealed to the president for help. But Trump indicated he will not be blocking arms sales to the kingdom, eliminating a possible punitive measure. The president told Fox News on Wednesday night: I think that would be hurting us. We have jobs, we have a lot of things happening in this country. He went on: I think that that would be a very, very tough pill to swallow for our country. I mean, youre affecting us and, you know, theyre always quick to jump that way. Meanwhile, NBC News reports Khashoggi stopped responding to his WhatsApp messages minutes after he entered the consulate last week.

(11,885 posts)For murdering a journalist is expected , because he's their friend, and is aligned with them . Killing others , especially journalists like putin has been doing he never attacks, ever. That should be another sign how corrupt he really is. If he could get away with it here, make no mistake he'd be doing it here .

(7,888 posts)There is speculation related to a team of 15 Saudis who arrived on a private jet with suit cases. A caravan of suvs was seen arriving at the embassy and leaving on the day of the disappearance. One theory is the journalist was murdered and chopped into pieces, stuffed into the suitcases. One of the 15 was a doctor with the skills required to dismember the body.

A team of 15 Saudis flew into Istanbul last week, drove to the Saudi consulate and then departed that same day on private planes headed for Cairo and Dubai. This is according to The Washington Post, which has been tracking the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi has not been heard from or seen since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. It's not known whether he's alive or dead. Shane Harris is one of the reporters working this story for The Post. And I asked him - 15 Saudis sounds like a lot - do we know what their alleged operation was?

More than a week has passed since Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi vanished after visiting the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul. Turkish authorities are telling journalists what they think happened, citing released video footage: that Khashoggi was targeted and murdered.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that before Khashoggi disappeared, U.S. intelligence had intercepted communications in which the Saudis had been discussing a plot to abduct him. Khashoggi has been a contributing writer for The Post.
But on Wednesday, the State Department said the U.S. had no advance knowledge of Khashoggi's disappearance.

Disappearance of journalist puts Saudi prince, a Trump ally, under a dark cloud
By Laura King, Nabih Bulos and Umar Farooq, Los Angeles Times
ISTANBUL - It was only six months ago that Saudi Arabia's young crown prince was feted in Hollywood and Silicon Valley, Manhattan and Washington as a reformist monarch-in-waiting, already putting a modernist stamp on an intensely traditional - and fabulously wealthy - desert kingdom.
Now the image of 33-year-old Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is tarnished by growing suspicion of Saudi state involvement in what may have been a brutal assassination of a critic. And the deepening mystery leaves the Trump administration, which has embraced the House of Saud more warmly than has any other Western leader, in an increasingly awkward spot.
The crisis was sparked by the disappearance and possible killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a well-known and well-connected Saudi journalist, self-exiled in the United States, who had for months sounded the alarm over increasingly autocratic moves by the crown prince.

But Turkish officials have concluded that whatever the intent of the operation, Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate. Investigators have not found his body, but Turkish officials have released video surveillance footage of Khashoggi entering the consulate on the afternoon of Oct. 2. There is no footage that shows him leaving, they said.
