Harris calls for repealing Trump Tax Plan, and instead giving families a $6,000 tax credit
Source: CNBC
With midterm elections 2½ weeks away and the 2020 presidential race around the corner, prominent Democrats are embracing an ambitious idea: Repeal and replace the $1.5 trillion Republican tax plan.
The proposals would get rid of the tax cuts and, in turn, funnel that money into government-guaranteed cash for low- and middle-income households.
Possible White House contender Sen. Kamala Harris announced a plan this week that would give working families up to $6,000 each year, with the option of receiving monthly payments.

(51,584 posts)All 3 didn't like it. One person said, "What, I don't get any money if I make $50,001?" Another complained, "Why don't they just deduct it from your yearly taxes in one big sum or in a refund?". The third complaint was bitching about it not being divided fairly among various wage groups. No one is ever happy, I bet the people were GOPers...it sounds that way to me.

So in this case, I would have made the headline this -
And then in the comments would put something like this (which includes what comes after the above portion) -

(6,376 posts)Repeal the tax cut that does basically nothing for the low and middle class, and use the money that would have been the tax cut for the top 1 percent and distribute it to those low and middle class families that desperately need it.
John and Jane Doe who make a combined $45,000 and have a child need that $6,000 a lot more than James Smith who makes 15 million a year needs an extra $500,000 to play with.

Now would it be better in the long run to steer that money towards SS or starting up a "medicare-for-all" plan? Or even using it for education, or infrastructure spending? Probably, but those are either long term projects, or eye-glazers. THAT'S NOT WHAT WINS ELECTIONS.

(1,406 posts)As the Atlantics Annie Lowrey explains, the bill would offer a sizable cash payment to most middle-class households.
Single people would get $250 per month or $3,000 a year, married couples would get $500 per month or $6,000 a year, and it would phase out for singles without kids making $50,000 or more, and for married couples or single people with kids making $100,000 or more.
It costs about $200 billion in the first year or $2 trillion over 10, roughly in the range of the price tag for the 2017 tax cuts.

"..think of Harriss plan as a particularly massive expansion of the earned income tax credit, so that the solidly middle-class benefit too, not just the working poor. And instead of loading up benefits at tax time, people could get them as a monthly check in the mail."
Snip
Its a big expansion of the safety net. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that it would lift 9 million people out of poverty.
And, not for nothing, but its arguably the closest thing that any 2020 contender has proposed to a universal basic income, an idea that is exactly what it sounds like: a guaranteed cash benefit to every American. Harriss office claims 80 million total Americans would benefit in some way. Thats not everyone, as under a true UBI, but its a big step.
And its a good step, I think.
The US spends a lot less on anti-poverty programs than most rich countries, and the LIFT Act would substantially remedy that.
If I were a senator and there were a vote on it, Id vote yes.
There are some but..but..what abouts to be addressed, however this is the most generous & fairest policy shift this country has seen in a long time & it comes at exactly a time when American citizens/taxpayers are holding on to a fraying tether.
It must change.
It is American Democracy as intended.
Of, by, & for the people
Congrats to the foward thinking & brilliant Senator(s) who put much time & thought into developing this promising policy.
Move it forward, ignore the naysayers. This is for America

Austerity and Reaganomics are interchangeable, either one produces massive Class disparity and massive poverty. Btw,Canada proposed a similiar type of program for one of it's Providences due to Social Economic disparities which developed in that Providence.

(11,841 posts)There arent enough richer people to pay for this. Yes, the higher income folks SHOULD pay more. But even the "more" wont be enough. I know everyone will disagree with me, but this will NOT work in the US. Finland just dropped their "basic income" program. Sweden voters theirs down. People making 35.00 an hour don't need a check from the govt. Even with the ridiculous tax cut bill in place, the govt took in the MOST tax revenue in history during the last quarter. And it still isnt enough.

(11,841 posts)You're liable to get that post hidden even though its factual. Has happened to me a few times. Pointing out how many people don't pay ANY income taxes pisses off a lot of people around here. They'll call it a "right wing talking point". Even with a long time membership and high post count.
But the fact is, so many of these election proposals are VERY expensive and no one ever has a REALISTIC way to pay for them.
