Florida officer strikes 14-year-old as he tries to arrest her

Source: CNN

A viral video of a police officer hitting a 14-year-old girl during an arrest has caused outrage in a Florida community.

The video -- posted to Instagram on Friday -- shows a girl being held down by two officers, one man and one woman. The male officer hits the girl in the side twice as he holds her shorts.

"Why you hitting her?" someone in the video yells. "She can't do that, her hands underneath her, the f*** you hitting her for?"

The police department in Coral Springs, about 29 miles northeast of Fort Lauderdale, said in a statement on Facebook on Friday that the video does not show the entire incident that led to the arrest.

I just don't know. Getting her hands disentangled is hard - if they lifted her and tried to do it, it would have been dangerous. That's never the way.

From my perspective, the key is how they engaged with her prior to this.
I hope they tried to talk her down. I guess that is what I would want to see. And did they take a few minutes, once they did the take down - to try to calm her?

The video doesn't show me what I need to see.

She was resisting the cops who were trying to put the cuffs on her.
Unfortunately for the girl, her resistance was working quite well, which required the cops to up their level of physical force to overcome her resistance.

It is wrong and unprofessional to hit anyone when they are subdued. The tactics used do not appear to be appropriate for a 14 year old either. If a police officer can't handle the situation using the least amount of force then they shouldn't be in law enforcement.

Those who fail to do their job should be in PRISON. This video shows the criminal action of a NUT who should be in PRISON for attacking a citizen. All the cops will protect the criminal because that is what they do. I think the attacking bastard should be EXPOSED to the full force of justice and the woman insulted should be a MILLIONAIRE......

FL officer caught on camera punching 14-year-old girl
October 20, 2018 at 3:13 PM CDT - Updated October 21 at 8:23 AM

CORAL SPRINGS, FL (WSVN/CNN) - A Florida mother has hired a civil attorney and a criminal attorney after her 14-year-old daughter was beaten by police outside a mall in Coral Springs.

. . .

“To say that the police officer was justified to punch her continuously while he has his knee on her back with her hands under her belly, the video speaks for itself,” Moldof said. “That’s the truth, right there.”

To attempt to debate this video in defense of the beating meted out to the 14 year old person unlucky enough to be caught at the mall while black is offensive. It doesn't speak well for the defender. J.L.

because it would show how fucked up the cop is.

In the business it is called a professional courtesy. In other words, protect fellow gang members at any cost.

I was married to a cop and saw it all of the time.

The 5% of cops that are honest are made to look bad by the 95% that are not.

about another teen they had just arrested.

She is not armed. She is not cuffed. She is FOURTEEN. The officer has the full weight of his leg on her back. Because of that, she cannot possibly lift herself to expose her hands as they are screaming at her to do. The officer said he was punching her to get her to release her hands. HOW in the fuck is that possible with 200 pounds of trained officer on her back ??

This is bullshit. When did it become acceptable in this country for police officers to physically assault 14 year old girls ? In classrooms, outside public pools, on the roadside and outside a mall in Coral Springs.

I am so mad I could spit nails over this. Anyone else notice that it is always girls of colour ? I don't see cops assaulting white teenage boys with the frequency that they are now attacking young Black girls. WTF ?????

ANOTHER THING -- This is Coral Springs. Anyone remember what happened there last February 14th ? Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School ring any bells ?? It is unconscionable to me that cops are this insensitive to these kids.

Viral video of the girl’s arrest is a reminder that police violence affects black women and girls too.
By P.R. Lockhart Oct 22, 2018, 3:40pm EDT

A Florida police department is defending its officers after a viral video showed an officer punching a 14-year-old black girl as she was pinned to the ground, calling attention to the ways police can violently interact with young black women.

The incident occurred last Thursday as officers with the Coral Springs Police Department responded to reports of a large group of teens creating a disturbance at the Coral Square Mall. The teens were removed and banned from the mall by police after mall security received complaints, but a smaller group of the same kids returned soon after. The officers had already arrested one of the teens and were arresting the unnamed girl when the video was recorded.

In a video posted to Instagram, the girl is shown lying on the ground as two officers, one female and one male, both kneel on top of her. As the female officer attempts to pull the girl’s arm out from under her body, the male officer strikes the girl in her side as he holds her shorts.

”Why you hitting her?” an off-camera voice yells. “She can’t do that, her hands underneath her, the f*** you hitting her for?”

There's a long history of that in the U.S. unfortunately - and in many other countries besides.

It's always been difficult to belong to an ethnic/religious minority, almost anywhere you look.

Thank you, Judi, for always keeping up with these stories of police excesses or abuses.

I for one belive democracy needs police - but above all it needs oversight.
