Trump admin promises to 'encourage' tree burning for energy

Source: The Hill

Three federal agencies said Thursday that they’re working to embrace burning trees and other biomass to create energy.

Labeling wood burning as environmentally friendly is at odds with environmental groups and some scientists, who say that the process of creating electricity, steam or other energy forms from wood releases all of the carbon dioxide that the trees had previously removed from the atmosphere.

William Schlesinger, a biogeochemist who used to lead the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, wrote in Science earlier this year that burning wood is likely a net negative for the environment.

“Trees remove CO2 from the atmosphere, and burning wood returns it. But recent evidence shows that the use of wood as fuel is likely to result in net CO2 emissions and may endanger forest biodiversity,” he said.

I had a close relative who was took part in the Catholic Church's war on movie theaters, books publishers in what they called the drive to establish decency. People took pledge in Church to uphold the church's bans on theaters and publishers and sent out people to picket movie theaters that dared to show films they found objectionable. This was especially appealing to this relative who went to every drug store, book shop with his list of items to be ban. Here is the strange thing about it. He never read a book in his entire life and was funcually illiterate. We laughed at the fool as he tried to match up the titles and demanding that the sellers remove them. The League for Decency's life was short lived and soon discredited by virtually every intellectual in the country. I realize that this is old history, but it is analogous with the same mentality of the Trumpites who display the same ignorance. Today you would have a impossible job trying to convince Catholics to take some pledge or boycott and picket movie theaters and book sellers. New generations are coming and I have faith that they will come to their senses just as my generation did.

As you've no doubt heard, he's openly hostile to the environmental movement - and today in fact announced he's nixing Brazil's Ministry of Environment.

He's subsuming it into the Ministry of Agriculture - the very people most responsible for the wave of deforestation (rain forests the size of Texas, gone just since 1970).

Ugly times, these.

which is mainly wood, right? There was a chemical warehouse fire in Parkersburg, WV just 1 year ago, and I was trying to find information about the air quality hazards. Not a whisper, but I found out that wood smoke isn't healthy.

https://cfpub.epa.gov/airnow/index.cfm?action=smoke.index

I imagine whatever ass thought this up is taking a dig at environmentalists.

Duke energy in North Carolina buys wood chips to burn to produce electricity every day. I've been to two plants and seen it. Tree farms are harvested, chips are made and boom, on go the light switches.

to generate electrical power. Wood burning combined with planting more trees to yield excess wood mass is too environmentalyl "green" for him. He is after all, a coal man. He has his reputation to protect.

some scientists, who say that the process of creating electricity, steam or other energy forms from wood releases all of the carbon dioxide that the trees had previously removed from the atmosphere.

Why is it only SOME scientists? Are they talking about dead trees?

I am beyond flabbergasted.

you can always count on the Trump administration to make the absolute worst decision to handle it. Wind power, solar power? HA! That would be efficient and renewable. Let's push coal and wood instead! Seriously, they always make the worst decisions possible. The dumbshitometer just went off the scale.
