NYT updates Steve King story to call his remarks 'racist'
Source: The Hill
BY JOHN BOWDEN
The New York Times on Saturday issued an update to a news story about Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) which changed a description of his past controversial remarks to label them "racist."
In a tweet, the Times wrote that the change was done to "more accurately" describe King's history of remarks about immigrants and diversity, which the newspaper previously referred to as "racially tinged."
"We have updated the language in the article to more accurately describe Steve King's history of racist remarks," the Times wrote in a second tweet about the story, which referred to King's close reelection battle in Iowa.
King has faced increased pressure recently for remarks about immigration and race, which this week earned denouncements from Republicans including National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) chair Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH) and Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake (R).

(128,768 posts)When I saw they had written "racially tinged", I was like WTF? His shit has been full blown bullhorn racist.
This type of media coddling and equivocating only confirmed to me that THIS is why these disgusting people keep doing disgusting things. They are never called out on their bullshit racist/homophobic/anti-semitic/misogynistic crap.... Yet when those impacted by the bigot's words and deeds, start calling them out, the self-same media is quick to react and try to diffuse the issue by blaming the victims for fighting back and doing the "well both sides do it..." nonsense.
NO you jackasses, "both sides DON'T do it", let alone do those being attacked have their own ELECTED OFFICIALS "doing it" like the attackers have.

then the media start calling for more "civility"--but only from our side. They typically look away from the extreme incivility (and outright viciousness) on the other side.

(128,768 posts)It's the same thing that happens with bullies. When the person getting bullied finally starts to fight back, then in comes a teacher to blame "both" the bully and the bully's victim with some weak nonsense like "Well it takes two to tango".
Then they wonder why bullied kids carry guns to school.

(9,696 posts)They should report the facts and let people decide. Calling someone a liar only makes their defenders more enraged. Say that same person made so many provably false statements instead.

(1,736 posts)Let the congressman himself claim it's not racism, but do not give him linguistic free passes that he doesn't deserve to hide from his deplorable statements.
Good call, long overdue. Should have been handled this way all through the long season of racist appeals by the GOP, way back in the Reagan days.
