U.S. militia groups head to border, stirred by Trump's call to arms

FALFURRIAS, Tex. -- Gun-carrying civilian groups and border vigilantes have heard a call to arms in President Donald Trump's warnings about threats to American security posed by caravans of Central American migrants moving through Mexico. They're packing coolers and tents, oiling rifles and tuning up aerial drones, with plans to form caravans of their own and trail American troops to the border.
"We'll observe and report, and offer aid in any way we can," said Shannon McGauley, a bail bondsman in the Dallas suburbs who is president of the Texas Minutemen. McGauley said he was preparing to head for the Rio Grande in coming days.
"We've proved ourselves before, and we'll prove ourselves again," he said.
McGauley and others have been roused by the president's call to restore order and defend the country against what Trump has called "an invasion," as thousands of Central American migrants advance slowly through southern Mexico toward the U.S. border. Trump has insisted that "unknown Middle Easterners," "very tough fighters," and large numbers of violent criminals are traveling among the women, children and families heading north on foot.

A Washington state resident who once bragged she was going to take her Minutemen group to the “next level” was sentenced to death Tuesday for plotting a deadly home invasion that took the life of a 9-year-old Arivaca girl and her father.
A Pima County jury deliberated four hours over two days before deciding Shawna Forde, 43, should join the other two women on Arizona’s death row.
Forde, 43, was convicted Feb. 14 of first-degree murder in the May 30, 2009, deaths of Raul Junior Flores, 29, and Brisenia Flores, 9, and of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Gina Gonzalez, Flores’ wife and Brisenia’s mother.
Jurors were told Forde needed money for her border protection group, Minutemen American Defense, and decided to rob drug smugglers near the border.

On May 30, 2009, 29-year-old Raul Flores, Jr., and his daughter, 9-year-old Brisenia Ylianna Flores, were murdered at their home in Arivaca, Arizona, during a robbery by Shawna Forde, Jason Eugene Bush, and Albert Gaxiola. Gina Gonzalez, the victims' wife and mother, was wounded but survived the attack after exchanging gunfire with the intruders, wounding Bush. In 2011, all three assailants were convicted of murder. Forde and Bush were sentenced to death, while Gaxiola was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Attack
Forde and her accomplices gained entry to the Flores home by claiming they were officials looking for fugitives. The suspects had the expectation of finding money and drugs that could be sold to finance Forde's militia group, the "Minutemen American Defense," which patrolled Arizona's border with Mexico. When they found no drugs, the intruders took inexpensive jewelry and fatally shot 29-year-old Raul Flores, Jr., and his daughter, nine-year-old Brisenia Ylianna Flores.[1][2]
Gina Marie Gonzalez, the 31-year-old wife of Raul Flores and the mother of Brisenia, was in the home during the attack and was shot three times.[3] She survived because she pretended to be dead. When the assailants left the home, Gonzalez called 911 emergency services and armed herself with her husband's handgun. While Gonzalez was on the phone, the assailants re-entered the home, and Gonzalez exchanged fire with the attackers, wounding Bush in the leg. The killers then fled. Gonzalez identified two men—one white, the other Mexican—and a white woman as the attackers. Gonzales identified the white man (Bush) as the one who had murdered her daughter and her husband.
An early exchange within the 911 call was recorded as follows:
Gonzalez: They shot me and I pretended like I was dead. My daughter was crying. They shot her, too.
Operator: Are they still there, the people who, that shot them?
Gonzalez: They're coming back in! They're coming back in!

Brisenia was a third-grade student at the Sopori Elementary School in Amado, Arizona, at the time of her death.[5] Another of the Flores's daughters, a 12-year-old, was at her grandmother's home in Sahuarita, Arizona, during the attack.[6]
