Cal Fire: Campfire is threatening 15,000 structures

PARADISE, Calif. (KCRA) —
Tens of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes Thursday as a destructive wildfire continued to grow in Butte County, prompting more evacuations orders throughout the day.

The fire, called the Camp Fire, has destroyed several hundred structures -- including homes and businesses -- in Paradise, is threatening 15,000 other structures and has injured multiple people.

"Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation," Cal Fire Capt. Scott McLean said late Thursday. "The wind that was predicted came and just wiped it out."

The wildfire ignited around 6:30 a.m. in the Camp Creek Road area near Highway 70 in the Feather River Canyon. As of 8 p.m., the fire was estimated to be 20,000 acres in size with no containment, Cal Fire said.

Multiple injures reported by firefighters and civilians, but the extent of those injures is unknown. More than 2,200 firefighters were fighting the fire, and it is still uncontained. State of emergency has been declared. Authorities fear the fire, fueled by strong winds, could reach Chico -- a city of 90,000 people where many Butte County families already have evacuated to shelters.

2. We're told to stay inside with air circulating here in SAn Francisco.

Ours isn't the worst air in the Bay Area, but it's bad enough not to walk the dogs through GGPark this morning. My husband wore a mask to work and took several more for his colleagues. I just put damp dish towels at the base of the front and back door.

The air in the North Bay is horrible, and two fires around Malibu are also really bad. So bad that Malibu is evacuating.

3. The air is terrible this am in San Francisco

Was up in Chico a couple of weeks ago and it was very day. I looked going to Paradise when I went to CSU Chico. It was such a nice little funky little town that had a kind of hippie vibe. I feel so bad for those people up there,

and I'm mid-Peninsula, about 40 miles south of SF. We were up north last month, and saw all the burnt-out areas along 5 - devestating.

When I went to Chico, back when it was still state college, Paradise was the hot destination place for retired people. I always thought of it as the place where the old men walked up to the road to jingle change in their pockets, and watch cars drive by. I was astounded to notice Paradise more then doubled in population from my days up there.

and the sky's color is the same as sunset when it is noon, you know it is bad. When the 2nd largest school district closes schools for a week for the first time ever, when it jumps 12 lanes of a major freeway merge, when the sky looks like an atom bomb was just exploded from a city hundreds of miles away than you are experiencing what San Diego did in 2003 and 2007. It is Hell!

One of three major wildfires roaring though California has burned its way into state history as the most destructive blaze on record in terms of structure loss, with more than 6,700 structures gone in two days, according to Cal Fire, the state's fire-fighting agency.

The large Camp Fire in Northern California, which obliterated 80% to 90% of the homes in one town, has left at least nine people dead, officials said Friday. Kory Honea, the Butte County sheriff, said 35 people have been reported missing in the Camp Fire.
