Law enforcement authorities in Pender County were called to Topsail High School in Pender County on a report of an active shooter on campus but there are reports that it could have been a piece of malfunctioning heating and ventilation equipment that made a sound similar to gunfire.
...
But WECT News reported that there may have been some students on campus when the incident was reported around 7 a.m.
...
WECT TV reported that a local commission said no active shooter has been identified.

The commissioner, identified as George Brown, said the noise that sounded like gunfire may have been a piece of equipment at the school that has been malfunctioning in recent days. The equipment sounds similar to gunfire when it is not working properly.

My uncle had just returned fron active duty in WWII and a car went by the house and backfired loudly. That fast, he hit the floor. I would imagine those sounds stay with you for a long, long time.
In the tenor of the times, (thanks in no small part to the NRA and its members) I think we are all very much on edge at anything that sounds even remotely like a gunshot. With the abject cowardice by our congress towards any gun control whatsoever I am not sure how soon it can change.
