Trump, stung by midterms and nervous about Mueller, retreats from traditional presidential duties

Source: Los Angeles Times

For weeks this fall, an ebullient President Trump traveled relentlessly to hold raise-the-rafters campaign rallies — sometimes three a day — in states where his presence was likely to help Republicans on the ballot.

But his mood apparently has changed as he has taken measure of the electoral backlash that voters delivered Nov. 6. With the certainty that the incoming Democratic House majority will go after his tax returns and investigate his actions, and the likelihood of additional indictments by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, Trump has retreated into a cocoon of bitterness and resentment, according to multiple administration sources.

Behind the scenes, they say, the president has lashed out at several aides, from junior press assistants to senior officials. “He’s furious,” said one administration official. “Most staffers are trying to avoid him.”

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, painted a picture of a brooding president “trying to decide who to blame” for Republicans’ election losses, even as he publicly and implausibly continues to claim victory.

This really reminds me of Al Franken's "Why Not Me?"
It's actually not a very good book but the story sounds eerily similar

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_Not_Me%3F_(novel)

The Presidency
The Void, a book supposedly written by Bob Woodward, describes Franken's brief and turbulent tenure at the White House. After Franken makes a bizarre inauguration speech apologizing for slavery, the resulting backlash sends Franken into depression. Franken's aides give him anti-depressant drugs, but this causes Franken to display strange behavior. Franken has himself cloned, punches Nelson Mandela in the stomach during a state meeting, and hatches a dangerous plan to assassinate Saddam Hussein by flying to Iraq and hitting him with a plaque that reads, "World's Greatest Grandpa." Congress forms a committee to investigate Franken's mood swings, which leads to the unraveling of his administration. After his diary is publicized, Franken is forced to resign.

As much as I like to hear that dump is suffering it's shitty to hear that he is doing things that are pissing off our allies and trading partners. This struck me as especially bad:

Just as Trump was returning to Washington on Sunday evening, Pence was heading to Asia in the president’s place, and at his first stop greeted Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Trump’s absence, experts said, is notable, and a glaring affront to many Asian leaders.

“It matters more in Asia than other regions because ‘face’ is so important,” said Matthew P. Goodman, a senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a former White House coordinator for Asia-Pacific strategy during the Obama and George W. Bush administrations. “Your willingness to go out there is a sign you're committed and not going is a sign you're not.”

It seems any credibility we may have gained as a nation from Obama's presidency has been undone cheeto face. The bottom half of the electorate has succeeded in shooting our country in the foot again.

We elected Clinton, then after two terms screwed that up with W. After that disaster, we elected Obama for two terms. But then we proved that we could hit bottom with Trump.

So even if we find another FDR, other countries have come to realize that we will probably follow up after 8 years with a new burning toxic-dump of stupid and evil.

We are going to need a generation to recover - starting when the cycle ends.

This is how it has been for at least 30 years. It's his perpetual state of operation. Example - the below was written in 1990 NOT yesterday!

An Empire at Risk - Trump's Atlantic City; Debt Forcing Trump to Play for Higher Stakes

By DIANA B. HENRIQUES WITH M. A. FARBER JUNE 7, 1990

<...>

A Risk-Filled Business

In the seven months since a freak helicopter accident robbed him of his top casino executives, Mr. Trump has for the first time become directly involved in running these complex operations with thousands of employees, where management risk is as ever-present as chance at the gaming tables.

Since then, his casinos have been undermined by an exodus of senior managers, some of whom were dismissed and others who left complaining of Mr. Trump's overbearing and idiosyncratic style. Surviving staff members complain of low morale. Bills are not being paid on time, vendors say. And state regulators, growing more concerned, have stepped up a broad inquiry into all his holdings.

In recent weeks, Mr. Trump has been huddled with his bankers, who are concerned about his ability to keep making timely payments on the debt he used to accumulate such properties as the Plaza Hotel and the Trump Shuttle. Underlying those talks is his need for cash, which his casinos could satisfy through either strong performance or by fetching high prices on the auction block.

<...>

Since he took a more direct hand in his casino operations late last year, he has fired a number of senior managers. Others have walked out in disgust. ''I simply didn't want to work for Donald Trump any longer,'' said Jack O'Donnell, the former president of the Trump Plaza and a well-regarded gaming industry executive who quit last month. Mr. Trump has lashed out publicly at his own top aides in press interviews and on television, balked at complying with severance agreements and appointed executives to positions for which they seem to have little relevant experience. The result has been a level of friction that has become the talk of the industry - and that has made it increasingly hard for him to recruit managers.''People who work there are terrified,'' one regulator said. ''People are hiding under their desks.''
