Once again, work requirements approved for Kentucky Medicaid

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Trump administration has again approved work requirements for Kentucky’s Medicaid population after a judge blocked the state’s first attempt earlier this year.

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services said Tuesday the new requirements can begin as soon as April 1 and will be phased in regionally over several months.

Kentucky is one of 37 states that has expanded its government-funded health insurance program to include low-income adults with no children and no disabilities. More than 400,000 people signed up for the program, drastically dropping the state’s uninsured rate and propping up some rural hospitals who depend on the new revenue.

But Republican Gov. Matt Bevin has criticized the program, saying it is too expensive and does not make the Kentucky’s citizens healthier as the state is still behind most of the country in some key health indicators.

The new Democratic congress needs to file it's own lawsuit to keep the Trump administration from doing this.

Just like SNAP recipients, the vast majority of people who qualify for Medicaid are the WORKING poor. Requiring work, and paying to employ people to check Medicaid recipients' work habits is a big waste of money, like drug testing.

keep putting people like McConnell in office over and over again, even though there isn't one thing they can point to that he's done to help the people in that state. It's the same in Ohio. Nothing gets better under Republicans and yet they keep voting for them, sometimes mainly for their stand on two issues - guns and abortion. Makes me wonder if they really care about bettering their lives.

Giv'em all a shovel! That's a problem the gop has always had..torture the downtrodden...

But in June, a federal judge blocked it, ruling the government did not adequately consider how the plan would impact people who receive coverage.

... the Medicaid law in question also provides for new co-payment and insurance payment rules which have been put in place, removed, and now will no doubt be put in place again, leaving your average Medicaid recipient uncertain of exactly what is covered and what is not. And the work requirements are an additional burden to light up their lives. Perhaps there will be further legal action, it's about the only way to stop this nonsense, as KY's legislature is owned by the GOP.

This is so typical of the state of Kentucky to enact a law that basically is just cruelty to the old hurt and down on their luck folks. The most frustrating part is that if you leave the countryside and get into the cities like Louisville and Lexington it's pretty progressive. But in many of the rural areas the evangelicals run everything. And they vote and motivate their congregations to vote Republican. It's very frustrating to watch. Otherwise, I think Kentucky would be a beautiful state and very progressive along the lines of Colorado. Also like other states, the AM airwaves are saturated with fire and brimstone right-wing talk radio. Until Democrats can counter those forces with something more positive, desirable and progressive it's going to be hard for the state change to blue.

Until Kentucky gets a bigger Democratic voice out in the rural areas we're going to be stuck with stupid laws like the one that Bevin is pushing. It's ridiculous.
