Deal with Mexico paves way for asylum overhaul at U.S. border

Source: The Washington Post

By Joshua Partlow and Nick Miroff November 24 at 12:09 PM

MEXICO CITY — The Trump administration has won the support of Mexico’s incoming government for a plan to remake U.S. border policy by requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims move through U.S. courts, according to Mexican officials and senior members of president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s transition team.

The agreement would break with long-standing asylum rules and place a formidable new barrier in the path of Central American migrants attempting to reach the United States and escape poverty and violence. By reaching the accord, the Trump administration has also overcome Mexico’s historic reticence to deepen cooperation with the United States on an issue widely seen here as America’s problem.

The White House had no immediate comment.

According to outlines of the plan, known as Remain in Mexico, asylum applicants at the border will have to stay in Mexico while their cases are processed, potentially ending the system Trump decries as “catch and release” that has until now generally allowed those seeking refuge to wait on safer U.S. soil.

What if:

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico was staffed by an office of Asylum Services which consisted of enough personnel to handle the claims volume AND one or several "magistrates" as opposed to judges who could make initial inquiries and pass them along to Judges within the United States

Further, we could cooperate with Mexico to provide housing and other humanitarian assistance for as long as it takes to complete the case/process

The good thing is that it would take away the Administration's gripe about immigrants entering the country "illegally" (which they promoted by closing official ports of entry...and allow for a legitimate look at the asylum claims.

..for the better part of 40 years...

I've always believed I was there to solve problems, not make them worse. Some might call what I proposed a compromise...it's not...it's overcoming objectives to make a better life for people

fantasy thoughtbubble? Maybe...but isn't that kind thinking what we're paying people to do?

So what are the details of the agreement-not available!
So does Mexico pay for the Wall-don’t think so!
So then how much will the USA pay in US tax dollars to Mexico? I don’t see that anywhere so I imagine it is a detail.

In the history of the Republic I have never read or heard of a presidency that announces agreement after agreement with the agreements never being finalized. When this is an actual document let’s talk, other than that it is breaking like the wind, to quote Spinal Tap.

Wait for the details on this. Things never are as the Trumpians claim them to be. And we don't know how long the incoming President of Mexico is going to last by sucking up to Trump.
