Dimming the sun: The answer to global warming?

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by DonViejo (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Scientists are proposing an ingenious but as-yet-unproven way to tackle climate change: spraying sun-dimming chemicals into the Earth's atmosphere.

The research by scientists at Harvard and Yale universities, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, proposes using a technique known as stratospheric aerosol injection, which they say could cut the rate of global warming in half.

The technique would involve spraying large amounts of sulfate particles into the Earth's lower stratosphere at altitudes as high as 12 miles. The scientists propose delivering the sulfates with specially designed high-altitude aircraft, balloons or large naval-style guns.

39. Doubt it would affect solar power at all

The total energy imbalance of the Earth is only about 0.5W/m2 or less than 0.05%. Eliminating half of that is too small to be noticed by residential or commercial solar arrays.

9. That won't extract the carbon turning our oceans acidic. The problem is human overpopulation.

Humans are causing this because we consume in an unnatural industrialized world we've created. Earth will heal without us. We just need to reduce our population. Simple, yet complicated.

So you dim the sun..radiant heat will still be trapped within the earths atmosphere...

42. Ummm. No!

Heat will radiate from the planet at the same rate it currently does. But this will cut the excess energy getting in by half.

19. Freakanomics talked about this about 10 years ago

I am very leering of additional atmospheric "engineering". The problem is that we are going to continue to pull the last cheap watt of fossil fuel out of the ground. I think we have now flipped to mitigation strategies. The argument for stopping it has been lost.

But if they can make it work on Venus, they can make it work anywhere.

25. The worst case scenario may be if it "works"

As already pointed out, it does nothing to stop other effects of dumping fossil carbon into the atmosphere, such as ocean acidification. Moreover, once you start doing this there's no turning back, because if you every stop you'll have an even more rapid rise in temperatures (since all the greenhouse gases are still present).
