Brazilian President-elect Adds Fifth Military Man to Cabinet

RIO DE JANEIRO/BRASILIA —
Brazil's right-wing president-elect Jair Bolsonaro on Monday picked retired General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz as his minister in charge of political relations with Congress, adding a fifth military man to his cabinet.

Bolsonaro, a former army captain turned politician who surged to victory on a pledge to end years of corruption and rising violence, made the announcement in a Twitter post.

. . .

Some Brazilians are concerned that the appointment of Santos Cruz, who led United Nations peacekeepers in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other current or former military officials marks a return to a militarized government.

Seeking to defuse those concerns, Bolsonaro, a fan of the 1964-85 military dictatorship, has vowed to adhere to Brazil's constitution and has moderated some of his more extreme views expressed during almost three decades as a federal congressman.

and it acts like a military dictatorship, it's probably a freaking military dictatorship.

Trump basically wanted to do the same thing here, but couldn't find any Generals that were as smart, or smarter than himself. Being a dictator is really rough when you're always the smartest person in the room. He has no one to bounce his ideas off of, no sounding board. It's lonely at the top.

He tried hard but since he, himself is not a former military man he know better than all the generals.

I don't often discuss the Brazilian dictatorship in my classes, instead focusing on Guatemala, Chile, and Argentina. I guess that will change next time I teach modern Latin America.
