Boy Scouts of America may declare bankruptcy

Source: New York Post

The Boy Scouts of America is mulling declaring bankruptcy amid flagging membership and an avalanche of costly sex abuse allegations, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Leaders have hired Chicago law firm Sidley Austin for help in a potential Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, sources told the outlet.

The organization has been fending off lawsuits over alleged abuse, including one filed by four former scouts who called the club a “pedophile magnet” and alleged that they were molested by scoutmaster Waldron Ackerman between 1974 and 1976. . . .

I take no pleasure in posting this. But, the 50s are gone. I liked much about that era, I lived it, and loved it. Goodbye, BSA.

back in the 80's I had the opportunity to metal detect the oldest BSA camp in the country before it was sold and bulldozed for housing. I found many coins from the 18 to early 1900's and many medals, some rare, artifacts. Many of the rare items I donated to the councils museum. It was a treasure trove of history.

I learned a lot in scouts. Rule # 1 do complain about the weather
the person in front of you and the person behind you are getting the
same weather.

And summer camp was the stuff too.

And I was very suspicious of one assistant who seemed to treat the younger boys in special ways, but otherwise I loved it, kept me away from my abusive father. (G-d, that was 50 years ago!)

The problem the BSA has is that they sold out to the LDS and bowed to their every command. They broke from them, but it was a poison pill to do so. Many potential members had been forever driven away by the LDS-forced policies, and then the break with the LDS caused a huge drop in membership.

They've done well in youth protection in recent years. It was much more focused in my years as an adult than it was in my youth. The changes were easy to notice.

I would argue now that the LDS is in it's past, the only argument I have with the BSA is its unenforcable farce of a religious requirement that directly contradicts the words of it's founder.

I hope they find a meaningful way to merge with GSA and go on forever.

My father bullied me into the organization (the way he bullied me in to everything else...), and I loathed every minute of it.

I lasted long enough to work through the Cubs, the Webelos, and a tenderfoot. Then I quit. Nothing my Dad could say would change my mind. I never missed it afterwards.
