Trump Admin Moves To Officially Ban Bump Stocks

WASHINGTON (AP) The Trump administration moved Tuesday to officially ban bump stocks, which allow semi-automatic weapons to fire rapidly like automatic firearms, and has made them illegal to possess beginning in late March.

The devices will be banned under a federal law that prohibits machine guns, according to a senior Justice Department official.

Bump stocks became a focal point of the national gun control debate after they were used in October 2017 when a man opened fired from his Las Vegas hotel suite into a crowd at a country music concert below, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds more in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

The regulation, which was signed by Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker on Tuesday morning, will go into effect 90 days after it is formally published in the Federal Register, which is expected to happen on Friday, the Justice Department official said.

1. About damned time!! Will the NRA try to fight this, considering the shape they are in currently?

22. I was thinking that Trump's checks from the NRA bounced or just stopped showing up.

Unless his dementia is causing him to actually do good things. In which case, he's a lot further gone than we thought...

30. No word yet from the NRA, but a different group has already announced they will challenge it

The Gun Owners of America said they will file a challenge in court. I would expect others to jump on-board as well.

Nor are the Dems in the House such as Adam Schiff.

19. The process started a year ago.

There's a rough timeline here :
https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=ATF-2018-0001

It does seem awfully slow, but I don't know if it's atypical.

This is the GOP's best?

BUT! Someone remind who was it that was going to TAKE our guns and gun rights.

The rubes have been had again.

10. What a joke. The bump stock is a piece of shit.

The only place where it makes sense to use it was out of that Las Vegas hotel window. Why would anyone want to shoot his rifle faster with less accuracy? It's no good for target practice.

It's like a Slinky, it was a piece of shit. I could never get it to make it go the whole way down the stairs. A Slinky never helped kill anyone though.

12. Never say never...

https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/pdfs/toymemo05.pdf

20 toy related deaths in 2005, including:

A 5 year old became entangled in a slinky and ribbon and strangled.

And also proof that Edna in the Incredibles was right, a 9 year old jumped off a bunk bed and the cape of his costume caught on the bedpost.

You are correct though on the fact that bump stocks are a piece of shit - there is no practical use for them. There is no need for a wannabe machine gun.

17. I don't think you have any idea of the purpose of full or near full auto.

There's a reason the military will never go back to semi-auto only.

24. The military doesn't hang horseshit like "bump stocks" on their firearms

Speaking as a veteran (Good Conduct Medal 3rd Award - I got out two months before I would have received my 4th), there is absolutely no reason for a civilian to own a full-auto weapon.

25. That's not the arguement you made in your other post.

Your comment:

" It's no good for target practice. "

An irrelevant statement as accuracy isn't the goal of auto fire or near auto fire now is it?

Maybe you could explain why auto fire is a good thing to have in certain situations?

27. Full auto is for suppressive fire and mass killing

Let's say I'm trying to move an infantry squad to contact. It'll work much better if I don't have the enemy killing us while we're trying to kill them...so I have my squad machine gunner fire his M249 (which only fires full auto) over the squad's head in the direction of the enemy. This will cause them to take cover and either not fire back at all, or fire erratically in hopes of causing us to take cover too.

If we're on the receiving end of an enemy assault, my M249 gunner will be able to kill them in greater quantities than my troops firing singles would be able to.

Now understand: I absolutely LOVE to fire full auto. It is the most fun thing you can do in the Army. It's also something that should stay in the Army.

Here's a post of mine from back in 2013:

I was only qualified with the M-14 June 1964. On full auto you were off target after 5 rounds at most.

32. With about 90% public support (among the rational) hardly a bold move.

The NRA is on the ropes with legal costs up the wazoo.
They're hiding in the long grass.
That only leaves the full-fledged yahoos scattered throughout the land.
Not even a voting bloc.

Simply trump, trying to fake rational behavior...
