The Rev. Jesse Jackson says his son will not be ready to return to Congress in the immediate future.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) is at his Washington, D.C., home with his family, after being released from the Mayo Clinic. He was treated at the clinic for Bipolar II depression and a gastrointestinal ailment.

It has not known when Rep. Jackson will return to Congress. But speaking to reporters Saturday morning — including CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli and WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser — the senior Jackson said it will not be immediate.

3. I know I'll get a lot of shit for this

but I think if he's not going to return within the next month, he should resign. He's been out for over 3 months and it looks like he won't back in the near future.

Frankly, I have never approved of congresscritters taking prolonged leaves or staying in their seats while incapacitated.

Congress is re elected every 2 years, so Jackson is up for reelection in November. Is it too late to get someone else on the ballot?

But, it really depends on what the majority of his constituents are saying. I don't have any problem with a political consideration that goes either way. I think protecting a seat from a certain takeover by the opposition would be prudent and supportable. I just don't know enough about his district to make that call. That's where the decision should come from, if the congressman is in any reasonable state to make such judgments. It may be too soon to start urging him out of his seat, though. i don't think that mental illness should be regarded any less sympathetically than other debilitating injuries. It's not as if there isn't a good chance that he can fully recover from depression, for instance.
