McConnell blocks House bills to reopen government

Source: The Hill

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday blocked two House-passed funding bill that would reopen the federal government.

Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), surrounded by roughly two dozen of their Senate Democratic colleagues, tried to get consent to bring up a bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through Feb. 8, as well as a separate package that would fund the remaining appropriations bills through Sept. 30.

But McConnell objected, arguing they would be “show votes” ...

Under Senate rules any senator can try to force a vote or pass a bill, but any one senator can block them.

Dems try to open government and GOP blocks it. But having the votes would look even worse.

This refusal to vote on these bills and the one that had previously passed the senate needs to be the headline of everything we say... far more important than emphasizing that the wall is a dumb idea/Mexico’s not paying.

McConnell blocking these votes is akin to his blocking Garland. We cannot roll over.

that you blame them personally for McConnell refusing to allow these bills to be voted on. The reason McConnell is the one blocking the bills is so that he can be the token bad guy and the rest skate on their responsibility for those votes not happening.

Trump & Republicans are one and the same.

Don't let ANYONE get away unchallenged saying Democrats are to blame.

Remember to remind people this is Trump's Christmas Shutdown. He is grinchy, he is mean, he shut it down days before christmas and it has been that long. He said he was proud to own it, before he tried blaming Democrats.

Considering the other Senator is Kentucky is Rand Paul and the Governor is Bevin I'd say that there is a good chance he would lose a primary to a right wing challenger if he caves. Be interesting to see how long he will drag it out.
