HELENA, Mont. (AP) A Montana politician is proposing the state give more than $8 million to help build President Donald Trump's proposed wall on the Mexican border as a government shutdown over the $5.7 billion project continues. The proposal seems unlikely to pass in a state with a Democratic governor exploring a run for president.
At least one other state, South Dakota, is considering voicing support for Trump's wall. But Montana, which last year faced a massive budget shortfall, appears to be the first to propose spending its own money on the project.
Scott Sales, a fiscally conservative Republican who leads the state Senate, says his proposal is a "small token" to show border security "is of vital interest to all citizens regardless of what state they live in."
. . .
"Congress is basically dragging their heels over $5 billion, which is really trivial compared to what we spend on an annual basis," Sales said Wednesday.

(81,432 posts)Dems should demand to temporarily end the GOP tax scam until all the cash needed for his wall is accumulated. Or propose a one time wall tax, equal percentage between rich and poor, with no loop holes. The rich will loose their collective asses and the poor, tRumpster supporters, will have to cough up what they demand for this ridiculous scam.

Montana seems to have attracted a lot of nutcases since I was born and raised there. I remember when it was a "blue" state with Senators Mansfield and Metcalfe and Representatives like Arnold Olson and Pat Williams - all decent and compassionate politicians. That was - unfortunately - a LONG time ago.
Thank heavens it still has Jon Tester as one Senator and Steve Bullock as Governor to restrain the crazies somewhat. The DNC really needs to work harder with the grassroots to help break the GOP lock on the Legislature.

Their trivial share of a trivial $5billion would be a trivial $16.25million.
Fiscal conservative or crooked?

(2,412 posts)Montanans are way too practicle and down to earth for this. This will be a very unpopular idea there. This is just playing to the base, who fortunately are not in charge in Montana.
