Bipartisan Senate group forming in search of shutdown deal amid impasse between Trump, party leaders

Source: The Washington Post

By Erica Werner, Sean Sullivan and Damian Paletta January 14 at 3:05 PM

A bipartisan group of rank-and-file senators are planning to hold discussions on how to end the weeks-long government shutdown, with talks between congressional leaders and the White House at a standstill.

The group involves Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) and others, according to an official with knowledge of the deliberations who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private discussions.

Prospects for achieving any results are uncertain as the group begins meeting this week or even fully launch. But the group’s creation is a sign senators of both parties are eager to end the shutdown, even if it means taking matters into their own hands amid an impasse between top Democrats and President Trump.

With the shutdown entering its fourth week, Trump remains dug in on his demands for $5.7 billion to build hundreds of miles of new walls along the U.S.-Mexico border. Democrats are refusing to give him anywhere near that amount.

Short of the $5.7B (or whatever it is), the Mueller investigation shut down, and who knows what else.

Short of that, the GOP crime family is just fine with the country twisting in the wind.

All Trump's life he never had to putt that 3 footer. Someone always said, that's good, pick it up. He's standing over another 3 foot putt and all he hears is Democrats saying, putt it out. He wants his gimmie, his hands are shaking.

There will eventually be some additional money for border security to give Trump a way out (Trump does not give a damn about the wall, so if he digs in it will be obvious Trump is out to destroy the country no matter what, ball then goes back to Mitch and the GOP Senate). The money will cover current maintainence and some strengthing of current barriers, minor funding for additional barriers where warranted and cost effective, and money for more technological monitoring and man power. There will be NO continuous border wall proposed nor voted on.

The House may agree to something like this AFTER some of the voting to open the government has taken place and Trump has officially signed.

"But Trump has made clear he would veto this legislation,
and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says he won’t bring anything up for a vote that Trump doesn’t support."
