Pelosi asks Trump to reschedule State of the Union address

Source: Politico

Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday asked President Donald Trump to reschedule his State of the Union address — or deliver it in writing — as long as the government remains shut down.

"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Trump.

She’s a mother-of-FIVE, and then there’s the grandchildren, too. She’s handling him like a mom with a VERY unruly, undisciplined, spoiled, and overly coddled adult-sized five-year-old.

actually be working for the good of the country. It could be very destabilizing if he were to cancel it, both here and abroad. This way she either goads him into doing it, or "they" reschedule it, which is a little less scary seeming since there's an adult involved with the decision. I can't imagine a State of the Union in the current situation, and I don't mean security.

Inside the White House, some aides have discussed using their captive audience for the State of the Union to have the president admonish lawmakers for a shutdown that at that point would be on its 39th day, and to reprimand them by saying they haven’t given enough attention to what the administration views as an immigration crisis along the southern border.

The Office of Management and Budget is gearing up for the partial shutdown to continue through February, and aides have discussed using Trump's Jan. 29 State of the Union address to admonish Democrats over their opposition to the wall.

but the Democrats will make sure that everyone knows that the backdrop he uses is not the Capitol Building and the paid men and women, most of whom are not really members of Congress. Also make sure people know that his State of the Union speech does not have to be made in person, but can just be a written document sent to Congress and this was not his idea.

Facing Trump’s tantrum, Pelosi takes away the TV

By Jennifer Rubin
Opinion writer
January 16 at 1:15 PM

To say House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has mastered the art of dealing with President Trump would be a gross understatement. She fact-checked him in the Oval Office on live TV and passed spending bills to reopen the government, thereby reinforcing Trump’s responsibility for the shutdown. To top it off, she’s taking away the president’s TV. More precisely, in response to Trump’s nearly month-long temper tantrum, she has told him he won’t get his prime-time State of the Union address on Jan. 29.
....

Meanwhile, Trump’s overall approval rating is a puny 37 percent. “Trump’s support among Republicans and Republican leaners remains high (80% approve), while nearly all Democrats and Democratic leaners (96%) disapprove of his job performance. The partisan gap in Trump’s job approval is wider than for any president in more than six decades.”

In short, Pelosi has the full support of her party and a sizable majority of the country behind her. Unlike Trump, many don’t view the wall as a dire issue, but 58 percent do see the shutdown as a “very serious” matter.

We don’t know how this will end, but should the shutdown create a serious safety hazard or take a big chunk out of the economy, there is little doubt who’s going to get the blame. And Pelosi knows it.

Your periodic reminder Woodrow Wilson was just awful.

Thomas Jefferson ended tradition of a President delivering annual message to Congress in person because he thought it seemed too monarchical. (Woodrow Wilson resumed it.)
