FAA halts flights into La Guardia amid staffing shortages, shutdown

Source: The Hill

The Federal Aviation Administration halted flights into La Guardia airport in New York City on Friday amid a shortage of air traffic control staff.

Severe delays were also being reported at Newark International and Philadelphia International airports as air traffic controllers work without pay amid the longest partial government shutdown in U.S. history.

The FAA's website highlighted long delays at all three airports, which its website connected to staffing shortages.

Newark International Airport was experiencing delays of 45 to 59 minutes, according to the FAA, while delays at Philadelphia International were between one hour and one minute, and one hour and 15 minutes.

The teams arrive on chartered jets, so I suppose the FAA could somehow insure that they can fly. But thousands of fans won't be able to get there.

And for those of you who are tempted to make a scornful post about how you never watch football or any professional sports, that's okay. Save your typing fingers. Personally I won't be watching the Super Bowl either, because the team I wanted didn't make it all the way. Oh, well. Next year maybe.

It's also obvious that terrorists simply do not understand American culture and our collective obsession with sports. I've been wanting to write a story about a terrorist group remains very patient, and waits for the next time the Washington Redskins (or whatever name they might go by in the future) are in the Super Bowl. I'd have them invade at the very beginning of the game, and if the Redskins won, no one in charge would figure out what had happened until the next day, maybe longer. Wish I were a better writer.

And in the same way that one accident results in other impatient and careless drivers causing other accidents along the way... this shutdown will likely INCREASE the risks at other airports as flights and passengers are diverted and flights rebooked.

The FAA has zeroed-out the risks at LaGuardia, but those risks are simply MOVED to other airports... and now THOSE airports have an increased possibility of some catastrophe because of understaffed control towers, and distracted-overworked controllers.

Along with the understaffed and overworked-distracted TSA agents, it won't be long before Trump is dealing with his own nationwide 9-11/Katrina.

I pray every day. (But I'm not going to tell you what my prayers are.)

My father is at PBI (West Palm Beach) now and said they are delaying flights there. That is a smaller airport, but it is busy, with a lot of direct flights to the Northeast and DC, and a decent amount of rich people at the private area. Private jets use ATC, too.

Planes flying into La Guardia and Newark from other airports on the East Coast are not allowed to take off. These airports are not closed, they just can't have planes taking off as usual. Planes that are taking off from the West coast are okay because they should have room for them by the time they get there. I hope they don't and these plane have to land in the mid-West. I do not want to see any accidents. If the whole East coast shuts down it will cause havoc.
