COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) A Maine man who is accused of being married to three different women in three different states is behind bars in Ohio.
A warrant was issued when 43-year-old Michael Middleton missed a court appearance Thursday in New Hampshire. A day later, he was arrested in Ohio. The Franklin County Sheriff's Department tweeted that the "Cupid of Chaos" was awaiting extradition.
Charges were brought in New Hampshire because Middleton married a woman there while also being married to women in Alabama and Georgia.
The New Hampshire wife said Middleton made her feel like he cared about her but eventually scammed her out of $20,000. Investigators say there could be more wives.

A man facing bigamy charges in New Hampshire may soon face similar charges here in Central Ohio.
Michael Middleton, 43, is being held at the Franklin County Jail, awaiting extradition to New Hampshire, where a grand jury recently indicted him on bigamy charges. Investigators said Middleton has wives in New Hampshire, Alabama and Georgia.
NBC4 Investigator Tom Sussi discovered that a 25-year-old, developmentally disabled woman is wife number four. A marriage license shows that Michael Middleton and Ashley Climer were married April of 2016, in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

Ashley and her mother, Laura Climer, said the couple had a baby together in 2017. Last year, they said Michael Middleton forged Ashley Middletons signature and put the baby up for adoption in Missouri.

One of his wives, Alicia Grant of New Hampshire, told Newsweek that she bought him a Camero Z28, clothing and a computer. Middleton took the computer back and pocketed the cash, she said.

Geez, and it's so close to Valentine's Day. Poor guy is going to miss out on giving all of his wives presents.
But jail should be fun.

If only men looking like George Clooney could get married, population would have quickly dwindled to nothing.

(238 posts)So -- one wife gave him $20,000 while another bought him a new Camaro, computer, and other stuff.
I'm lucky when my wife gives me enough allowance to buy new socks.
I hope this guy writes a book . . . I need some tips.

(4,429 posts)Solomon had 700 wives, and 300 concubines.
How he did that, I dont know. Trying to figure out just one is difficult enough if a challenge. Imagine trying to keep four happy! .

(571 posts)It's not the wives; it's the money. Why can a man have 1 wife and 2 mistresses, but he can't have 3 wives? Why can a man have 3 consecutive wives, but he can't have them concurrently? We have strange laws.

(8,311 posts)Scams are the usual time when someone actually gets criminally charged with bigamy.... getting them to grant spousal access to bank accounts, etc, under the premise of being their "only".
The issues that I think would come with codifying legal "group" marriages would have to include how to equitably handle a divorce. It's a lot simpler to handle dissolving that type of legal arrangement when it's just between two people, and any domestic relations attorneys on here will laugh that I seemingly call their field "simple" -- it's not. But would probably agree with just how much more difficult it'd be with a third adult party involved in the contract, along with any dependents depending on genders of parties.
Also have to say the most successful group relationship I knew, even though the sex was not between all parties but just along hetero lines, was with one woman who had two "husbands" for a time, although only legally married to one at a time they all lived together, knew about everything, and were okay with it, no religious pressure, and any could exit at any time (and it did eventually dissolve, though she maintains amicable relationships with both of them, and they with each other).
That's a big jump from the main reason more than one wife, outside of scams, is outlawed in the US -- the fact that in the past not-so-distant-past some have utilized religious pressure to force people to legally marry one person and then pressure other, usually far younger, women to religiously "marry" the guy too -- with "divorce" only at the command of the religious leader, and sometimes unwillingly done as well.
