Trump says he's not 'happy' or 'thrilled' with bipartisan border deal
Source: Washington Post
The tentative deal, announced Monday evening by congressional negotiators, would provide only a fraction of the $5.7 billion President Trump was seeking for 200 miles of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. It would instead provide $1.375 billion for 55 miles of new border fences. “I can’t say I’m happy. I can’t say I’m thrilled,” Trump said of the deal. Unless a border deal is signed into law, the government will enter another partial shutdown on Saturday. This is a developing story. It will be updated. 12. Maybe, maybe not!
We know he screwed up the last time...but with the cheers of his cult still fresh in his ears...and the opinions of Hannity, Coulter, that this bill is garbage...there's a chance he won't sign it!
Trump lacks the empathy found in a rock, he didn't give two shits about federal workers suffering in the last shutdown, why would he be concerned now? |

9. "Unless a border deal is signed into law" - WRONG. Civics 101-
It does NOT have to be "signed into law". If a piece of legislation is vetoed, then Congress can override and it becomes law. Alternately, if a piece of legislation is sent to the President for signature and it sits for 10 days (not counting Sundays and if not sent over near the end of a Congressional session in December) without being signed, then it will automatically "become law" without a signature.
This bullshit that the media keeps doing is driving me nuts. ![]() |

17. Well, technically, waiting out the 10-day timeframe of the pocket veto would take us past
Friday's deadline & the govt would have to shut down. Ditto if he sits on it for that length of time before deciding whether to sign it or veto it. In this case, the deadline rules.

18. A "pocket veto" only applies at the end of the Congressional term (before adjournment).
The "10-day wait to automatically become law" mention was done as a general "Civics 101" option and "How a bill becomes a law", something that the Washington Post is apparently unaware of (even if it doesn't apply here with respect to timing).

22. Yes, you're right. I was thinking the term applied to any time the prez "puts it in his pocket" and
doesn't sign.
But the 10 days still obtains, because 10 days would take us past Friday. The writer is correct to say that unless he actively signs this bill, the govt will have to shut down. (I'm assuming there's realistically not enough time between now and Friday midnight for him to veto and for Congress to override it.) You're also right that it wouldn't kill journalists to explicate the civics involved ![]() |

BumRushDaShow (38,586 posts)
25. Yeah see in that case
it has to do with the timing to allow for Congress to "override". If it sits between sessions when the old Congress has left and the new one has not been sworn in yet, then it gets that "pocket veto".
But again - there are other obscure tools that Congress has used where theoretically, Congress can also "stop the clock" - they have done it before over a weekend if something wasn't quite ready yet to be sent for signature, during which time some sort of lapse has occurred or is about to occur. I know they have done it during times when I was a fed and there was an imminent lapse in appropriations (where agencies were told to hold off on sending out furlough notices). Sadly there are all sorts of games they have played and can play. |

16. It's all Kabuki theater,
Trump will jump at this deal because the new fence will be on federal land. If Trump is serious about fencing hundreds of miles he's going to run into court battles or he will have to condemn people's property. Most people who have land along the border don't want a fence.

19. You notice how the money on offer just keeps going down? Down, down, down...
Our Dems are not caving -- Trump is. At one point the Dems actually offered him a fig leaf so he could say he got something, but he said no, threw his pablum against the wall and shut down the government.
Then the Dems (read: Mme Chair) fancied it up and offered him less money. Some here said the Dems were gonna cave. Uh, no, they offered him less money. And it is happening again. Nancy Pelosi was right: Trump is going to end up with a beaded curtain that he'll have to call a wall. And I'm saying the only way he can claim it's Mexican is if he sends one of his kids to the Tijuana bazarre to buy one for him. |

23. A bit from the article
snip--"“I don’t think you’re going to see a shutdown. I wouldn’t want to see a shutdown. If you did have it, it’s the Democrats fault,” Trump said. “And I accepted the first one, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished because people learned during that shutdown all about the problems coming in from the southern border. I accept it. I’ve always accepted it. But this one, I would never accept it if it happens.”
snip--"The bipartisan agreement announced late Monday by the top four leaders of Congress’ spending committees includes $1.375 billion for 55 miles of new fences along the border, short of the $5.7 billion Trump had sought for more than 200 miles of walls. It retreats from Democrats’ demands for stringent new limits on the ability of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to detain undocumented immigrants." The article names Mc Connell(Ky)& Thune(ND), both in their parties leadership are quoted. Interesting |

“I don’t think you’re going to see a shutdown. I wouldn’t want to see a shutdown. If you did have it, it’s the Democrats fault,” Trump said.
You keep demanding something you know you're not going to get. Not only that, only about 1/3 of country wants it. If you keep fighting for 1) something that isn't necessary; 2) something that won't work to address the crisis you made up; 3) something people don't want to spend money on (Mexico was supposed to pay for it, according to you) 4) something you didn't get the last time you held Federal workers hostage... Then it is ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT. (Or keep pulling the sh*t your pulling and watch the rest of us vote your stupid a** out of office.) |
