Park Barricades Removed: Occupy Wall Street Protesters Stream Back In To Former Camp

By CHRISTIAN SALAZAR, The Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Barricades surrounding a park that served as a camp for Occupy Wall Street protesters were removed Tuesday, allowing protesters to stream back in.

The atmosphere was celebratory but calm on Tuesday evening as about 300 protesters began filling New York City's Zuccotti Park a couple of hours after the barricades were taken down and a day after a complaint about the barricades was filed with the city. Protesters milled around, eating lasagna on paper plates and playing chess.

"Word spread pretty quickly, and we ran down here," demonstrator Lauren DiGioia said. "It's hard to remember what it was like before the barricades were put up."

On Monday, civil rights groups filed a complaint with the city's buildings department saying the barricades were a violation of city zoning law because they restricted public access to the space. The New York Civil Liberties Union commended the removal of the barricades in a statement late Tuesday.

I just watched more of the PBS series on the American Revolution this evening. What a rag-tag bunch of men George Washington formed into an army. Fortunately, Washington's army did the really rough work in forming our nation.

It would be so wrong for us to allow our country to become just another right-wing, inhumane, fascist state. Washington was so careful to avoid establishing a monarchy. We can't let that heritage of respect for the common person -- the rag-tag among us -- be forgotten.

OWS keeps the spirit of the American Revolution -- of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine -- alive.

Thank you, OWS.

Oh, and stay patient and non-violent. That's the most important thing. Don't lose patience. Stay non-violent and calm.

Now it's time to build on this victory. Grow the size of crowd, get the message out like before. When even people like Gingrich are getting on the anti-1% bandwagon, you know OWS is succeeding.

The U.S. is so corrupt a constitutional scholar here just signed a bill allowing indefinite jailing of our own citizens, I think the people of the U.S. have finally had enough of this predatory and unregulated capitalism.

let them camp there. I'm sure the authorities meaning Bloomers and Co. will find another excuse to get rid of the protesters but it could buy them some time to expand into another plan.
