One dead, multiple injured after Venezuelan national guard opens fire on opposition supporters

Source: The Washington Post

By Anthony Faiola February 22 at 9:28 AM

SAN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela – Venezuelan soldiers opened fire on a group of civilians attempting to keep open a segment of the southern border with Brazil for deliveries of humanitarian aid, leading to multiple injuries and the first fatality of a massive opposition operation meant to deliver international relief into this devastated South American country, according to an eye-witnesses and community leaders.

At 6:30 a.m. on Friday, a military convoy approached a checkpoint set up by an indigenous community in the southern village of Kumarakapai, that rests on the main artery linking Venezuela to Brazil. When the volunteers sought to block the military vehicles by standing in front of them, soldiers began firing assault rifles, wounding at least 12 people, four of them seriously. One woman, Zorayda Rodriguez, 42, was killed.

“I ask the armed forces , is it constitutional for them to fire against unarmed indigenous people?” said Jorge Perez, a local councilman in Gran Sabana, the district where the town is located who said he was present when the soldiers opened fire. “Is it constitutional to kill indigenous people?”

At least 30 neighbors took to the streets following the shootings, kidnapping three soldiers, according to Carmen Elena Silva, 48, who had joined in the roadblock, and George Bello, a spokesperson for the indigenous community.

CIA trained iguanas, Illluminati, Colombian saboteurs, Brazil, Portuguese pig farmers, the EU, Spain, Guyanese land thieves, the sun being too close to Venezuela and water being wet... all responsible for 1.7 million percent inflation and a daily minimum wage of 18 cents. And of course, a currency that has lost 99.99999979% of its value since Chavez took office in 1999.

I think I'd go with the corporatists.

I'm told that some local llanera bands might show up... providing Maduro pays them in food. Up front, of course.

Roger Waters has recently defended Maduro. He won't show up to perform though. Or be photographed with Nick. Its one thing to adore Chavismo from afar. Another being photographed with a blood-thirsty dictator.

Does anyone find it surprising that of all the countries in South and Central America with human rights abuses Washington decides to pick on the country with huge oil production capabilities?

Yes it's true Maduro is no good guy and is in fact a terrible head of state who is robbing his own people blind, but folks the fix is in. America is looking for another country to plunder of it's oil wealth. This is Iraq 2.0. And like Iraq it will not only fail, but it will cost America it's treasure and send it's economy once again spiraling downward.

America: a failing empire, a failed country.

PdVSA is a shambles. There is nothing but tarry, sulfurous crap to pump... if there was infrastructure to pump it. It would take about $40 billion to get it up to where it was before Chavez.

Besides, all the NEW good stuff has been found in the Essequibo, in Guyana. And Big Oil is all over that. Which is why Maduro has his eye all over the Essequibo.

America: a failing empire, a failed country.

Russian? Belarus?

But I stand by my belief that America, politically, is a failed country, that is by our own standards. I mean if you call what we have "fair and just" elections, well let's just say we will disagree.

That gets said a lot around here, when exactly was the last time the US didn't pay for a countries resources on the open market like everybody else?

And the US already was getting the largest portion of venezuela's oil.

Having troops fire on civilians, blocking aid from starving people, Maduro is obviously a monster.
