Paid family and medical leave bill appears doomed in Nebraska Legislature

LINCOLN A proposal to require paid family and medical leave for Nebraska workers appears in trouble after a morning-long debate on Tuesday.
It was the first time that a family leave proposal had advanced to debate by the full State Legislature. But several lawmakers complained that Legislative Bill 311 represented a tax increase and a mandate on business that was more appropriate in liberal states.
So far only three states California, New Jersey and Rhode Island have enacted similar laws.
"This is a mandate. Bam, slam: You're going to give (businesses) a huge tax increase," said State Sen. Mike Groene of North Platte. "This is progressive socialism at its worst."
